Spitting out pool water as you swim

So this morning right near the end of our Masters session I had a fellow lane mate (whom I have swam with for the past two years) publicly chastise me for spitting in the pool as I swim. This person even emphasized their statement by saying “we all are in agreement that …”.

I immediately wanted to say something right back with regard to is it better to swallow than to spit … which I know would have not been the right tact to follow. However, a few of my other mates did respond for me to the effect that they themselves spit pool water out all the time as they too find it revolting and unsettling to drink pool water.

I am talking about spitting pool water back out, not hacking up what is in your throat or lungs.

So … what are peoples thought on the issue?

It is perfectly fine. I thought everyone did that? Hell people blow their nose and pee in that water.

Besides I’m pretty sure that the mucus and saliva end up in the water just from having to breathe the way real swimmers do. What you encountered was a psychological ick factor from someone who didn’t think this through.

whether you breathe out your nose or mouth, you’re constantly emitting something into the water.

loogies are out of line though

Does your buddy drink his bath water at home?

You should have said “No way am I swallowing water I just pissed in.”

I nearly spit my coffee out when I read this…

You should have said “No way am I swallowing water I just pissed in.”

Thank you, I now have coffee on my keyboard…

I was going to say the same thing

You *might *want to poll the Women’s Forum for that one

Haha, next time you swim with this fella, get real close, and say quietly “Do you feel the water warming up around you?”
.

Yeah, try to not swallow any pool water and spit it back in the pool.
Try to get most of the snot into the gutter, but if not; oh well. (Harder with pools w/o gutters; oh well)

Been doing that since the late 60’s. As has just about every swimmer I know.

You must be swimming with triathletes.

You should have said “No way am I swallowing water I just pissed in.”

Perfect!

D’Wife had an encounter in the pool once with an Asian gentleman. He wasn’t spitting just a little blip, or* p’too* but long sloshy streams like a fountain

“Dude!” she reprimanded him “Do you need to spit like that? It’s fucking gross!!!”
“Michael P’elp’ spit inna watta,” he explained “I spit inna watta too!”
“Look buddy! When you have a dozen gold medals, you can spit anywhere you want! Until then, knock it the fuck off, or I’ll have the lifeguard toss your ass”

She’s a charmer!

This is like the peeing in the pool thread where the response is:

“Everyone gets mad at me for doing it! Of course, I wasn’t actually in the pool when I was peeing.”

The same principal applies for spitting and blowing your nose.
It is ok as long as no one sees it.

During the winter I will go to the pool with my sinuses clogged. When I leave an hour later my sinuses are clear.

I wonder how that happened?

Pools are gross. I thought everyone knew that. It’s why they dump tons of chemicals into them every day and are constantly filtering the water.

Your lane mate is an idiot. Unless you were spitting in their face, coughing up a big phlegm ball, or blowing a snot rocket in the pool, you did nothing wrong. If I swallowed all the pool water that got in my mouth in a workout, I would weigh about 10 lbs more than when I started. I would genuinely ask them what they recommend as a solution because water in your mouth is inevitable.

Show him/her these next time you are in the same lane.

that’s funny – i come in clear and they’re clogged when i get out. It’s like a mucus swap meet.
