Hey ST’ers - anybody try any, (or all), of the Aero Base Builder series, which culminates, (oooh, big word!) with ABB #5 - The Compilation?
#1 -#4 are 70-80 min. each, and all sound pretty similar to each other. Is it necessary to get all 3? Is one way better than the others?
And then #5 is 120 minutes, and takes clips from #1-#4. You think it’s better just to skip to #5?, (don’t tell Coach Troy)
I want some good, long stuff for the off-season. I have a bunch of the earlier workouts - the longest one I have is Mental Toughness, (90 min). Am also planning on getting #13 Tough Love, (3 hr).
I have number 1 and it’s ok. any more than once evry couple of weeks is a bit boring though although thats more to do with me hating indoor training as opposed to the DVD. I’d like to know what ‘tough love’ is like though…
Located in the Northeast of the US we get pushed inside due to darkness and cold. My buddy and I use whole bunch of the Spin DVD’s. Tough love is good at 3 hrs. because you can break it down into smaller chunks - for your money you get a multi use tape.
“tough love” is awesome three hours of hell- I would buy this before any other-followed by “have mercy”-which is a two hour complilation-do both on a cold winter saturday and you’ve got it all-as you can imagine good for teh meantal toughness too!
next buy “totally time trial”-which is excellent-boring but excellent

If you plan on using them a lot during the winter, then having a variety of the Base Builders will help with boredom. I couldn’t see doing the same one over and over…as it is, by spring you want to stick a fork in your eye than do another aerobic base workout. Just the change in view is worth it.
And I agree…absolutely add Tough Love. It’s a bit more intense and the sets have a lot more “creativity”…than the more simple steady state sets in the Aerobase Builders. Tough Love is the naughty aerobic base builder. You sort of feel like your cheating after doing the other ABB’s.
Yeah, I tried Have Mercy - but it’s only 30 min longer than Mental Toughness, and kinda similar. So, I was thinking I’d get something really long, and then the ABB’s - b/c they’re different.
TTT, huh? I have the 1st TT video - Time Trial Special. Bored me outta my skull!!!
There have been a coupla other Spinervals threads recently, maybe even one about the ABB series specifically. You might do a search, if you want even more ideas.
(Musta been the week you were gone. Don’t you hate it . . . wondering now what else you might have missed??)
Can someone provide a little more detail about the types of workouts on “Tough Love.” I went to the spinervals website and watched the short clip- they were doing a 30 minute interval which doesn’t sound to interesting.
3X10min (if memory is correct…the first set is big ring 1 minute, small ring the next…alternating. The second set might be sit for the first minute…stand for the second. Then back to big/small rings alternating for the last set.)
30 min tempo (you’re changing gears a lot, there’s some standing to stretch out the legs, cadence varies so it does seem to go faster than it sounds.)
5X6min
2X10 min (done like the 3x10)
20 min tempo (very much like the 30…just a short version)
I recommend all the Aero Base Videos… In fact I lived on these last winter in prep for IMLP. I did rides up to 3 hours indoors sometimes doubling up DVD’s. My cycling was noticeably stronger when I got outdoors. I also think that this is a good way to learn focus and concentration. If you ride 3 hours indoors and focus you will be able to focus for 6 hours outdoors. This is great Ironman prep stuff. 5 stars!
