Ok I am trying to get some good information on spin tri-spokes. I have an opportunity to buy a set for probably less than $150 for the set and am trying to figure out if its worth it or not. I am currently running velocity rims with 105 hubs. My front wheel is built as a 16 spoke radial laced wheel and the rear is the standard 32 spoke set up. I’m relatively light so i have not had any problems with the front wheel but as it gets older I get more worried about it holding up. I have a baby on the way so it would be a stretch to get the wife to sign off on spending even 150 for a wheel set so please don’t bother suggesting I save my money and get a better wheel. Thats not really an option. SO my question is are these really so awefull in the aerodynamics department? I seem to see a lot of people dogging on these wheels but I don’t see any real evidence to back it up. What I do know is that I had a set of spins on my mountain bike when I used to race and they were heavy but bomb proof and the only reason I ditched them was the weight which is not such an issue for me on my tri-bike as I don’t plan on jumping many logs! SO I’m really looking for some good advice here on my current wheel set versus the spins and if it would be worth it to get them and switch to them as my primary training / race wheels. Thanks in advance for any help!
These wheels have been discussed here in the past, but it’s been a long time. The general consensus was that they are uber-crap and should be avoided at all costs.

I don’t know that they are crap, it depends what you are looking for. If you need a durable, heavy, non-aero wheel they are perfect. I had a set that I used for training and being a cldye I wanted something that would not go out of true. I also used a set on my MTN at one point. Remember, Spin is out of business so once they break you will be SOL. What size do you need? I may be able to sell you at least a front cheap!!!
I am looking at a 700c set of wheels. And yea I looked through the earlier posts and I see lots of people bashing these wheels but I cant find a single review online or an actual test of these wheels versus say a specialized tri spoke or a hed. Yeah I know they are not as good but it still seems that they should be more aero than a 32 spoke wheel. However everyone seems to think they are about the least aerodynamic wheel ever made and Im just looking to see if anyone can back that up.
These wheels are crap when it comes to aerodynamics, but they are bombproof as you mentioned, and I think they look pretty cool. Offer $100 and see where you get.
You can race them fine, just don’t expect to go any faster on them than on 32 spoke Open Pros.
That depends on the application. As a tri wheel, I agree, they’re heavy and not very aero.
Back in the mid 90s, we used to use them for MTB observed trials and they were solid.
Sorry I have a 650. I don’t know anything about how aero they are, I ended up buying a bontreger select wheel set brand new for $130 since my rear has a case of the thermoplastic separating from the rim ![]()
Spinergy SPOX might have been worse, but essentially the spokes on the SPIN wheel are 3 huge cylinders, and they have a shallow rim to boot. They have been tested somewhere, by someone, showing how bad they were for aerodynamics, but I don’t know where that test might be.
I’ve ridden them and they are crap. My friend has a set and I was curious how bad a bad wheel set rides and these are probably the worst things I’ve ever ridden. They are heavy and not aero and feel like solid plastic, I would take my 32 spoke, 3x, velocity rims over the spinns.
Buy them if you want a good heavy training wheel.
