Speedplay Frog mtn bike pedals - what is the best alternative

I’m a triathlete, roadie, runner who plays a bit on the mountain bike. Been using Speedplay Frog mtn bike pedals for decades. Sadly, they have been discontinued and we need new cleats and pedals for my husband asap.

What is alternative? I love the float and easy ability to clip in and out effortlessly.

I did put out a post in the ST classifieds looking for new or slightly used Frog pedals and cleats. But eventually we’ll need to figure out a new system.

The Crank Bros Egg Beater is a nice MTB pedal. Dual-sided for easy entry. Not nearly the float of a SP pedal but there is some.

Thanks, my husband was looking into those as well.

I’ve been a multi-decade Speedplay user and moved from the platform because the cost of the system was becoming prohibitive for multiple pedalsets that I use. I’m now using the Egg Beater pedals exclusive, for road and gravel, with good satisfaction. The cleats are durable and the pedals are easy to use; they do have non-centering, free float that feels similar to Speedplays, but not quite the same range, and they have cleats for road shoes, too.

Another reason I like the Frogs is that they are also good for fat biking on groomed fat bike trails. If you stop for whatever reason, they are easy to clip back into even if you get a little snow in them. Sometimes I have to bang my boot on the pedal to get out wetter snow but the Frogs work well in the winter as well as mountain and gravel riding. And they were not cheap. You should see what people are selling used Frogs and cleats for on Ebay. Someone wants over $500 for a pair of used Frog pedals and cleats. Good grief.

You could look at the frog replacement, speedplay SYZR I believe.

Those look interesting but sadly they too have been discontinued. What a bummer.

Yeah but you can still buy them.

Personally I’m a fan of the classic SPD pedals, just to throw in my own preference, even though I’m a speedplay user on the road, just to throw in my own bias
