Speedplay cleat ware

Hi All,

Great forum …thanks.

Now im just switching pedals from Look Keo to Speedplay zero.

I got a bit aof a surprise on seeing cost of speedplay cleats as opposed to the Look Keo’s. Now whilst the Look’s were good, if i have a critism its seems the cleats ware out exteremely fast (have others found this)

My question is can i expect a similar ware factor with the Speedplay cleats?

Cheers

Don’t know how long they last. I’m on the original cleats. 3 years total, about 11K miles.

Keo’s were lasting about 1500Km
.

I had my X-series (the zeros are an improved design) cleats for 6 years before switching them out… and I only did that because the bushings in the pedals were wearing out and I wrangled a free set of Time’s. I could have easily rebuilt the pedal bodies, oiled up the cleats and run them for a few more years.

Thanks for the response,

All very reassuring.

Cheers

I’ve used Speedplays X series since 2003, first the cromoly spindle model from '03 to '10, and the stainless steel spindle model since January of this year.

I have not replaced the cleats on the cromoly model the entire time I’ve used them. They don’t get much use now because they are on shoes (with pedals on a bike) that is in another U.S. state (waiting for me when I go to visit my parents).

Aside from the cleats, re-grease those pedal spindles every few months. Here in the Pacific NW, I grease the spindles every two months, and every month during the winter when we have a lot of rain. I went last winter without greasing the spindles, and the following spring, both pedal spindles locked up because the needle bearings were fried. After having the pedals rebuilt by Speedplay, I bought their grease gun and diligently maintain those spindles.

I have a pair of the original Byrne pedals, before they had the bowtie on them, which I bought second-hand in about '95. The whole system still works.

No, the Speedplays are a metal plate, takes quite a long time to wear them down. I have my road bike SP’s which are X5’s from 2004 and I have no intention of replacing them anytime soon. My Zero’s on my TT bike have almost no wear on them due to me always leaving my cleats clipped in. Easy to use and maintain.

Thanks to all that have responded… great news.

Cheers

i would suggest though you do maintain them regularly, taking them apart and cleaning them (crap can get into them).

I’ve also found the base plate screws if used through the winter can rust into the shoes quite easily, so i now take them out every month and clean it. After it happend in two shoes it was a little bit anoying!

I’ve replaced my cleats i think every 18 months, so about 8k miles…
