Yeah but it’s easy with those cheater skates. On hockey skates he’d maybe hit 30

NHL does have top speed competition in the all star games, but it has to be done with a stick around cones which requires a lot of odd techniques. Would be interesting to see what top speed nhl player can hit

Uhmmm, the photo has it EXACTLY like the bike landspeed record. There’s an aero cocoon they work behind. The bike record is so fast, the gearing to get up to speed is silly. There’s literally multiple chainrings geared to another chainring via a cog. Skating there is no gearing, hence no tow.
Still cool, but I definitely file it under “stupid human tricks”.

so easy ive done 2 or 3 times and wasnt even trying

the bike record similar set up, but the person hangs on to vehicle being towed to goal speed, then releases for about 30-60 seconds

Pink? Nhl skaters max 25mph
This is a super impressive record!
I think most slowtwitch athletes underestimate how hard extremely short speed events are. The muscle activation and speed to skate at those speeds are insane. You can see he can barely breathe after based on how hard it was for him.
To balance on skates going that fast doesn’t make sense really. A single chip in the ice would cause some real problems and the hip angles would be weird (in skating, the faster you go, the more the skates angle changes).
That looks like Norway too. Insane effort.

The final before 08 and after 15 was a full lap. The fastest has been 13.1s.
Comparison, a short track speed skating rink is done on an international hockey rink (a little bigger than NHL I think). 1 lap is 111.111m
SO, making a ton of assumptions, fast NHL skaters average 8.48 m/s
World Record short track is average 12.66 m/s over 500m
8.48 m/s is 19 mph
12.66 m/s is 28 mph
The perimeter of an NHL rink is exactly 522’. So could be 39.85 ft/s. That would be 27 mph

good math skills but you know they work the tangents not hitting the full perimeter distance.
That looks like Norway too.
Confirmed. Lake Savalen not far from Tynset in central Norway

Good math, good analysis, but remember the NHL Skills Challenge is a sideshow to the regular season/playoff games. It’s really cool to watch and one of my favorite hockey events (the skills challenge as a whole), but these guys get paid to play hockey, speed is helpful but only one component of a player. Speed skaters make their money speed skating.
