If you like Bond movies you will like this one, probably Daniel Craig’s last as Bond. If you have seen a few of the Bond movies you will also relate many scenes in this movie to to other Bond movies. If you were a fan of Austin Powers you will think about this famous scene a few times:
Dr. Evil: All right guard, begin the unnecessarily slow-moving dipping mechanism.
Dr. Evil: Close the tank! Scott Evil: Wait, aren’t you even going to watch them? They could get away! Dr. Evil: No no no, I’m going to leave them alone and not actually witness them dying, I’m just gonna assume it all went to plan. What? Scott Evil: I have a gun, in my room, you give me five seconds, I’ll get it, I’ll come back down here, BOOM, I’ll blow their brains out! Dr. Evil: Scott, you just don’t get it, do ya? You don’t.
The story revolves around Bond’s one man quest to bring down Spectre, an international conglomerate of criminals that thrive on making bad things happen for profit.
Lots of action scenes as you would expect on land and in the air, great international scenery, lots of death and mayhem. Not enough Bond girls. See it as a matinee, it’s about 2 1/2 hours long.
I give the movie a B for a Bond movie; not the best Daniel Craig - Bond movie. Otherwise a B- to C+. Skyfall and Casino Royale was better. The Bond campiness is seeping into the series.
Saw it last night, I’d give it a B. The theme song sucked hard for a Bond movie, and I don’t recall any memorable one-liners from Bond most one-liners seemed to come form Q, the rest was solid Bond work. I’m really hoping we’ll see Bautista again as a “Jaws” type character, just keep popping up for a few movies.
I liked it, but wasn’t overwhelmed by it. Not the best of the Craig films. The ending is bullshit, but I like that they are reintroducing staple characters and have essentially completed the reboot. They’ve really watered down the womanizing of Bond in favor of upping some of the violence. This might be the fewest number of “Bond girl” interactions in any movie.
The theme song did suck. Not sure why people like Sam Smith. His voice and style don’t do anything for me.
I wondered if they watered down the soft core visual part of the womanizing because Craig isn’t in the kind of shape he was in the first three. He seemed a bit more paunchy in this one - relatively speaking, of course…he set the bar pretty high. But no rippling ab shots to dazzle Bond women and desperate housewives in the audience.
Skyfall and Casino Royale were much better Craig movies
Ummm…pretty sure Mendes directed Skyfall as well.
That movie set the bar really high in terms of the franchise, and I’d argue it could be its best. Following that up with anything would be hard…I’ve not yet seen Spectre, but will soon. Pretty sure I’ll enjoy it. Equally sure I won’t like it as much as Skyfall, but that’s okay.
In line with what others are saying, its much below the two high water marks of the Daniel Craig Bond, which were Skyfall and Casino Royale. I thought they didn’t really give much of a meaty role to Christophe Waltz. The man can play “evil/maniacal” and his character was so subdued.
There were a few moments where I could hear Mike Myers plotting an Austin Powers comeback. The dipping mechanism was one of them. The other clear moment was…
“Was it a hollowed-out volcano, like I asked for?”
I disagree with the reviews - I really enjoyed it, sky fall - at least the start with the chase in the LR Defender annoyed / annoy’s the hell out of me - I just find ms MP super annoying and the whole “take the shot” part on the train - it still winds me up just thinking about it
CW did not have a sufficient part, but overall, I think DC has been an excellent Bond, i think he’ll probably do another and the ending left a encore from CW a possibility.
The opening scene was awesome as was the car scene in Rome which destroyed millions of pounds of cars in about 20 minutes.
I like the fact that both DC and Tom Cruise in their respective roles don’t take themselves entirely to seriously, just seriously enough for it to be good whilst coming across that its a bit tongue in cheek
late to the party, but just saw it, and wow was it not great.
I expect great from Bond, given the budget, a talented director, and superb cast. But this just plodded. Maybe the script was the problem, very little invention there. Come on with the freaking countdown timers, that has been done to death. Craig seemed like he was phoning it in, M and money penny had nothing to do. And it always bugs me when actors take and give massive blows in the fight scenes and nary a bruise to be seen on face or hands.
On the plus side, some lovely machinery and the train shots thru the desert were beautiful. But if you haven’t seen it yet, I wouldn’t rush off.
This pretty much sums up my experience. I was really excited about seeing Spectre. I thought Skyfall was really good. I have never been much of a Bond fan, but DC has pivoted that for me. I walked out very underwhelmed. I didn’t think the story line was very compelling. I did have a hatred for the bad guy. I thought many of stunts and cgi were actually bad.
Other than the car chase, I just didn’t feel like it had much of Bond being Bond. It was more predictable than the past few flicks. And I was never sitting there wondering when or how he would bring down the bad guy (which is what I loved about Skyfall). Spectre never seemed to build to that pivotal moment for me. It jumped around too much.
It was enjoyable. Like others, I enjoyed the unique shots of the desert, cities and such. Those added to the film.
I did enjoy the fact that Bautista’s character never had a speaking role in the whole movie. He was just a giant goon. Kinda made me wonder what the point was of his character and why they spent so much time on him in the beginning.
Saw it this past weekend and while it wasnt my favourite recent Bond fick, I didnt think it was as bad as many are making out.
Yes the plot is a bit weak and the ending was kinda lame, but after that quip M made about the OO’s licence to kill and what it entailed (yes Im being rather vague as I dont want to spoli it for others), it was kinda justified.
Otherwise I though it was OK without long sections of nothing (which can happen with such a long movie).
Beautiful cinematogrophy of locations as per all Bond movies, some great big explosions, a couple of beautiful Bond girls and some great stunt sequences.
Actually, I think the most underwelming part for me was the car chase. I thought it was good, but not great, and the way Bond gets out of it was a total let down IMO
Could it have been better? Sure.
But it wasnt the total train wreck I was expecting after reading some of the reviews here and elsewhere.
Maybe is wasn’t the best Bond movie because, as much as I get it, Craig hated it. In an interview later on, he said that he would rather slash his wrists with a broken glass then do another Bond movie. If it is true, I find it very unprofessional, especially when he was paid gazillion $$ to make it. Would be hard to enjoy the movie if you know that the main dude hated every minute of it. And how can he perform well if he hates what he does so much?
was so bummed. casino royale had me hopeful. thunderball is still my fav.
Casino Royale is my favorite Bone movie, but I’ve liked each DC move less than the one before. Given the budget and source material I have high expectations and the movies, outside of the first one, have been pretty average in my opinion. The last two Mission Impossible movies have been much better than the Bond movies.
Sony’s rights to Bond expired after the last film and I wouldn’t mind if someone else had a crack a Bond with a new actor. Besides, DC doesn’t seem enthusiastic about doing another film.
