Can anyone tell me what the difference is in just the frames of Comp, Expert and Pro? I know that if you buy them new the pro is the only one you can just buy the frame, but besides the paint, what is the difference?
…in terms of the frames, the pro has an oversized bottom bracket. In terms of just the frames, there’s no difference between the expert and the comp, (the expert is named as such because it comes with a nicer build build-up). If you’re going to go all carbon, get the pro with the oversized bb. It is nasty…
Great, thanks for the info. My LBS has a Pro frame, fork and seat post they never sold going for $1150, I’ll probably pick it up. It should be quite the improvement over my Felt S32.
The pro was sold as a module and a frame, the module came with a specialized crank and an oversized BB. If you are just looking at a frame, then it takes a standard BB and crank.
thats a sweet price on the frame.
Anyone know the diff. b/t these and the S-works transition (top of the line?) Is the comp a ‘compact’ / smaller /different geometry frame or am I assuming wrong and comp doesn’t mean compact? So the frames of the Expert & Comp are the same? Interesting. What about the pro & S-Works pro? Any differences b/t the expert and the pro? What is the advantage, if any, or an oversized BB? Thanks
All the frames are the same, with the exception of the carbon and the BB.
All the carbon frames from the comp, expert, pro and sworks are the exact same geometry.
the sworks has a “better” carbon than the others.
There was an aluminium transition as well, that is built off the old sworks from 2005. They cleaned up the cable routing, but its still a great frame.
I want to know what folks think that they are getting with this new BB…yet another solution to the problem that no one had…
“Designed in California”…uh huh…yet oddly, even with ISIS - external - and UltraTorqe, not only are pro cyclists no faster - neither are pro Tri folks…good thing we got the “upgrade”.
I dunno, I was annoyed with the BB and that’s one of the reasons i didn’t buy an sworks.
I hate anything proprietary. I also learned that brakes hidden aren’t always a good thing.
I am going back to a frame with things in the place that they have been for a long time.
Amen. I am all about standard (Chris King) headsets, square taper BB and external cables. Hell, I miss pump pegs! When I had my Litespeed custom made - it included each.
The Specialized oversized BBs aren’t proprietary, they are BB30, which is fast becoming the new standard. You can get BB30 cranks from Zipp, FSA, and SRAM and Campagnolo and Shimano both sell adapters to use their cranks in that setup.
While BB30 may be a “solution for a problem that doesn’t exist” that doesn’t mean that it isn’t better. BB30 cranksets are typically lighter than other setups. However, the main benefit is to framemakers who have a lot more surface area to work with in the BB shell area. They can then build up lighter bikes that are also stiffer and stronger than non-BB30 setups. Most of the high-end framemakers (smaller shops, not the big boys) have no stake in what components you are using, yet you see most of their new bikes coming out with BB30 setups, which implies they see an advantage to that setup.

But, if you talk to them (and I have a few) most will admit that it is nothing more than marketing.

Ummm…I’m pretty sure there’s a sleeve you can put in there to run a normal BB. Just need Italian threaded cups.
