Specialized S-Work Road Shoe owners

I’m curious of anyones usual maintenace they perform on the shoes to keep their life up. I recently noticed one of the rear heal pads is coming loose/becoming worn down.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

The heels are a replaceable item, as are most parts on specialized shoes

Absolutely perform maintenance on the shoes to keep the life up. I’ve replaced the BOA laces and ratchets once, and will probably have to do it again soon. I’m also planning on replacing the lugs on the back as they’re pretty worn down. I bought the shoes specifically thinking I’d do the maintenance to keep the shoes for a longer period of time. I don’t know if shoes have a life expectancy, but the soles feel just as stiff as the day I got them.

This is exactly what I was looking for. How hard is it to replace something like the BOAs?

Pretty intuitive and not hard at all. I don’t know if there is an instruction manual online, but I just took the little key that came with the shoe, undid the BOA screw and just looked at how everything was assembled while I was disassembling the old parts. Installed the new parts and put everything back together. One thing that I would caution you on is to not be tempted to use a lot of steel lacing, but just use enough to get your feet in and out of the shoes. I used a fair amount in one of the spools, and I’ve found that ratchet has worn out prematurely. Only explanation I can think of is that I used too much lacing. Also, bought the replacement parts from my LBS, and they gave me plenty of replacement parts and lacing for less than what’s advertised on Spesh’s website. Either they didn’t know what to give me or they were cutting me a great deal.

Really easy. I don’t know about the older ones but on my new shoes it is a field replaceable part (they show how to move the bottom one up to the top position if the top one breaks during a ride)

For future reference you can probably get all the BoA parts direct from BOA for free. I requested reel kits for both my s-works road shoes and my s-works mtb shoes and had them within a week at no charge.

Hmmm interesting. Looking on BOA’s website, it looks like you’d have to pay for replacement parts? Did you call their Customer Service or what? I’d be interested in getting the reel kits for free. Free is always good.

Warranty department. I filled in an online form, they called to confirm I had the correct dials.

Boa provides replaceable parts at no charge for the life of the product in which we are integrated. In order to support the continuing improvement of Boa products and the products of the Brands we work with we need the following information in order to provide your parts at no charge. This will also be used as shipping information to get you the parts you need.

Uh… WOW. Amazing! Thought I could just get one set of left right reels… updated cart for 2 and boom. Free. Thanks!!!

seriously. Thanks!

been having issues with my BOA after 3 years of use and love the shoes. Took 5 minutes to fill out the form and I’m good to go free of charge.

Now that’s a warranty!

I’ve had my 2013’s (the newest model) over a year now and haven’t had to do anything but wipe them down to keep them nice and clean.

Have you used any of the older models? Specifically the 2011? I’m wondering how the new BG insoles and the new carbon sole molding compares. Not to mention how does the velcro strap feel versus having full boa lacing?

I have the last year of single dial and the newer 2 dial system. I prefer the 2 BOA system, the lower Velcro strap does little to the fit of the shoe. In fact now that you mention it, I don’t know when I last changed the tension on the lower strap.

I have both the 2012 and 2013 Sworks shoes (in addition to 2011 Pro’s).

The fit on the two Sworks is different. I thought the 2012 sworks was signficantly narrower than the pros and the newest Sworks model is an even closer fit to the foot.

I don’t notice the new carbon sole at all. I’ve done research on the 2013 shoe vs. a competitor and found an advantage for the Sworks (cannot attribute to just the sole), but I haven’t compared one Sworks to another.
I’m not currently using the current insole (I always choose a support level below what I need and modify for additional support).

I like the security of the velcro strap. It sets the forefoot width well and allows the boa to work on a smaller area.

Wasn’t the 2012 and the 2011 Sworks shoe the same?

I have a late 2010 model w/older BOA that pops out and metal wire & a 2012 model w/two more flush BOAs. Fit is closer in the forefoot (probably due to the additional BOA) w/the newer model and maybe slightly easier to get foot into because the shoe opens up a bit more. Footbed feels the same.

Older model is marginally heavier. While I was waiting for a replacement dial for the newer shoes I used the older ones recently and forgot about the differences with five minutes.

Great shoes. I have the Pro MTB shoe, fits very much like the S-Works shoes but I just didn’t think BOAs & dirt go together; ymmv.

I got mine about 6 months ago and haven’t touched the lower velcro strap since the first time I put the shoes on. I don’t think it even does anything - just cosmetic. It doesn’t seem very aero though, maybe I should just cut it off.

Anyone have luck attaching a heel loop at a local cobbler to make entry quicker? I am pondering this and would love to see some examples. I’m still racing in my old Shimano tri shoes because they are quick/easy to get in and out of, but I much prefer the s-works shoe.

my old roommate did that to her S-works. she just stitched it up at home. Looked good and held fast.
