Specialized Purist bottles

Just a quick note that I finally got my hands on a few of these, and they are tremendous bottles. Seems silly to make note of something as low-tech as a bottle, but these really do the trick.

I’d wager that most people have preferred Specialized big mouth bottles for a while now, but the Purist takes it to the next level.

Same shape as the old ones, that locks into cages well. Same large opening, perfect for powder scoops & ice cubes.

Non-leeching plastic, good stuff. But the key is the valve. It’s just like the Camelbak valve, except you can still pull it open with your teeth.

Camelbak bottles are great, in theory, but they necessitate a 2-handed effort if you don’t want to leave them unlocked, and the locking is key for a horizontal mount.

The purist bottles have the same quick flow valve, but you can get it all done with one hand or your teeth.

Anyhow, my 2cents on a simple product that gets the job done quite well.

Yes, great bottles unless the temp outside is over 100 degrees because in that heat the valve is a pain to grab with your teeth to open because the material really gets soft.

Love that bottle too and will soon do a long term review.

It actually has been amazing to me over the years that a bike company makes such great bottles.

Can you leave it “open” in a horizontal mount without it leaking?
.

Not really. It puts you in the same situation as the Camelbak bottle. In my experience, the valves do not work well for this application.
Fluid tends to squirt out on bumps & when stopping.

The upside of the Purist bottle is that you can open/close the valve with your teeth. With a Camelbak, you need to turn the whole top with your other hand.

I always spin my Camelbak valves open right before I pull them from the cage and right after I put them back in. It makes it a two step operation, but still a one-handed one.

(My one complaint with the Camelbak valves is that the bottles are hard to hold with your teeth. I like to drink from my horizontal bottle, so after I finish my first one, I hold the empty in my teeth while I move the full one on the seat-tube up between the bars. Standard bottles are a bit easier to hold.)

(My other one complaint, (yeah, I know, that makes two complaints), is that they don’t really indent like normal cycling bottles, and therefore don’t really work in all cages. For example, they crawl out of Elite cages, where the Polar bottles don’t.)

I haven’t tried the Specialized bottles.

I can attest that they don’t work in cages…launched mine out of my horizontal mount during the first 2 miles of Chattanooga yesterday…left me with no nutrition on the bike…

You mean Camelbaks don’t work in cages, right? If so, I agree. The cutout is not deep enough & in the wrong spot.

Specialized bottles work great in cages, in my experience.

yeah, the camelback bottles…someone is going to find a brand new camelback bottle on the streets of chattanooga…never even hit the lips before it hit the pavement
.

You can surely hold the Purist bottle upside down with the valve open without it leaking, but I don’t have a horizontal mount on my bike to test it
.

Great concept. Now if only specialized made these in an insulated version similar to the camelbak podium chill.

Now that would be the perfect bottle !

The Camelbaks don’t work in some cages. It may even be a small subset of cages that they do work in. But, if you find the right cages they work fine.

I bought some Cutter carbon cages off of Bonktown a while back with which they work awesome. You need a cage that works by holding the whole bottle firmly, instead of relying on the indentation in the bottle.

I wish they would make an insulated version. My water gets warm and gross after 20 minutes. Other than that they are perfect bottles.

I also have a camelbak podium bottle and I have an insulated one so my water will be cool enough to drink by the time I start heading back home. I’ve never had any problems with it fitting in my cages but it is a tight fit. The purists fit so much better though. I just wish they were insulated.
