Specialized Athos - what gives? Why is it so popular but also sold used?

So I think the Specialized Athos is a mastersroke: a 14lb road bike that has disc brakes.
So incredibly light unlike any other disc brake bike out there.

It’s remarkable, on my tri team it has suddenly become the upgrade that everyone wants. There are at least 5 who have done so.
I personally like how Specialized has gone away from aero and focused on the weight-weenie part.

However, why does this seem to be the most frequent bike advertised (used) by The ProsCloset?
It seems like the Athos is being bought and then sold quickly.

  1. what “seems” might not reflect reality without knowing how many Aethos have been actually sold and how many owners are trying to get rid of them (on top of it, in comparison with all other mainstream brands)

  2. Aethos is a nice bike, mega light, rides fairly nice. However, it isn’t the stiffest bike around (naturally, by being so light), so heavier dudes might find it “noodly”; also, it isn’t the most aero bike around, so guys riding on flats or rolling terrain (which is likely 90% of all) might find they need a bit more effort (say, 10-15 watts) to hold the same speed especially if they already have an outright aero bike.

  3. if Specialized ever developed Aethos with integrated bars and hydro lines (just because I like how super clean front end looks, ignoring all the potential downsides of building / maintenance etc), I would absolutely see this as an n+1 to my fleet.

Reportedly the SL8 will be much lighter than the SL7, so most likely it will basically be an integrated Aethos. Makes sense since most dealers seem to sell out of Tarmacs way before the Aethos. Might as well integrate the cables and call it a Tarmac to sell more.

I have a Aethos because I race both non-drafting and draft legal races and I can do both races with one bike. I did three races in Irving last week - one non-drafting and two draft legal. The Aethos uses standard dimensioned components so I was able to add my existing clip on aerobars and a forward angled seatpost for morning non-drafting race and remove them for the DL race in the afternoon. Yes, I lose a bit of time on the non-drafting race but I’m never going to podium so I’m not overly concerned. And it’s easier than lugging two bikes halfway across the country. My only complaint is the stock wheels could be a bit more aero. I plan to add a pair of deeper rimmed wheels.

I took a look - it looked to me like both the Tarmac:Aethos and Roubaix:Aethos ratios were about 10:1.

All the shop employees selling them at a profit to fund the new model after having bought them with a shop discount?

I think some people get pretty excited drinking the koolaid (and Aethos is a great flavor), so are quick to buy, then either because they overspent, spent without discussing, it doesn’t live up to ALL of the promises, or because they start drinking a different flavor, need to unload it, and The Pros Closet is a great way to do that quickly and recoup a decent amount because they do hold value well.
