My commute home takes me along a lovely stretch of the South Sask River - It seems to me that one could swim against the current for a nearly an hour and maybe get 20 feet upstream and get a great workout in the process. Does anyone out there use their local river as a training/spawning ground?
Isn’t that called an endless pool?

Yes, just much cheaper, and more desireable than putting fish in ones endless pool.
I’d be interested in the spawning part with the right company.
What part of the spawning intrigues you, masturbating underwater and depositing your sperm on the rocky bottom or dying shortly afterwards and having your eyes plucked out by scavenging birds?
Just curious

Or being ‘eaten’ by a ‘bear’ which brings a whole new nuance to the discussion.
Oh? Off to the Lavender Lounge?
'scuse me…
Sorry for giving a real response to this thread, but yes I do it when I go the Colorado River. It is kinda cool to do, but it get’s old real fast. I can do it for 5 min but not much longer (due to boredom).
It is a good workout though.
A more challenging swim it to swim across the river without being pulled downstream too far. This is a good strength workout.
We went camping a few weekends ago next to a small river with a considerable current. It was great fun for a short while, just a bit faster than I was able to swim upstream.
However, the river was named, accurately, “Milk River”. Due to the current, so much silt and sand was being carried in the water, it looked the colour of Tea with milk or cream, and had zero visibility under the water. Making it hard to dodge people on tubes floating down on the bright summer days.
I do it in the Columbia river during this time of the year. Move closer to shore for slower water if you get tired. It’s also helpful to find a fast moving portion in shallower water where you can test different things against a constant stream.
