Soylent?

My wife works in tech and at a holiday party last week someone she works with was talking about the many people in their Palo Alto HQ who drink Soylent. A number of her coworkers drink it occasionally, but many drink it as their main source of food (so this person claims). I just saw it on Amazon too.

Today I was planning out a trail 50K I have this weekend, thinking about fueling and started to wonder if something like Soylent might be a good idea for ultra races and/or super long training runs + I’ve taken to doing ~30 mile solo and group runs lately, aside from racing, and want to try different fueling options.

Has anyone (other than Charleton Heston) tried Solyent? What are your experiences with it? Is it any better than just sticking with my usual Infinite + gels/chomps? Seems like a full meal replacement might save time and effort.

Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.

Don’t eat anything your grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food.

Don’t eat anything incapable of rotting.

If you’re concerned about your health, you should probably avoid products that make health claims.

I don’t eat anything that doesn’t meet those criteria laid out by Michael Pollan. Soylent does not even come close. It’s just typical food science poison by another name.

Have you heard of Soylent? It’s a meal replacement shake. They say it’s the future and we live in a post-food world and you can just drink this genetically modified shake instead of ever eating again. No, it’s not made out of people. I think. Well I wanted to test what it’s really like to live in a post-food world so I replaced all my food with Soylent for 10 days. 10 FREAKIN’ DAYS.

Also, a post-food world sounds pretty grim so I figure we’ll all still be drinking our problems away so I still got blasted like I usually do during the 10 days. Plenty of people have tried going on only Soylent for long periods of time but no one’s tested Soylent in this drunken way before soooooo you’re welcome.

This video is my documentation of how this experiment went. I hope you enjoy or learn a lot or hate me but subscribe anyway. I very much liked being a human guinea pig for you. Let me know if you want me to do more stuff like this! I’m thinking about wearing a weighted vest for a week straight to see what it does to me.

This is also, I think, the longest video I’ve ever uploaded. I had to tell the full story of the goopy, no chewing journey and that’s just how long it ended up being. What do you guys think about getting this much from me??

“I think it’s … Secretly … It’s just SlimFast in a cooler bottle”

I had a sip of some from a classmate. It was bearable, but only because of its novelty. I could never stomach it for more than a day.

I heard the taste varies from person to person

Exactly. Same junk chemicals as canola oil, monoglycerides.

OH, that was a good one!

Classic movie - after watching it, I’m not real interested in Soylent, (green or any other color) :expressionless:

you can survive on it , you can’t thrive on it
.

I just skipped to the end where she posted her results - she lost weight but went up in body fat%. She said it’s not for her. I don’t need to test it (or even taste it) to know it’s not for me.

My kid (age 21) stuck with Soylent for pre-season college Water Polo last summer because he wanted to slim down. He slimmed down (probably more attributed to age and fitness level than to magical Soylent). And he also bonked hard regularly. Now he eats more like a rabbit and balances his calorie needs with his diet. He only drinks Soylent for breakfast now (after morning workout) because it is quick and easy as he races to class.

i drink it occasionally. we keep the bottles around the house regularly for an easy meal or “snack” if needed.

recently ive been mixing a bottle with ice and a couple of scoops of protein powder for a mid day meal / protein shake.

like others have said as far as actually drinking this stuff as meal replacements and being an active athlete in training? i would say no. just like anything like this it doesnt stay long with you and you’re hungry again in 30 minutes.

That entire piece of advice (generously described as such) is a health claim. Time to avoid.

I consumed this sporadically, for maybe one meal a day three or four days a week, for a while.

What I like about it is that the macronutrients (protein, fat, digestible carbs) are pretty balanced and that it has a decent array of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). It’s convenient and I find the flavor and texture inoffensive, and enjoy it as a milk substitute with cereal (though that of course adds more carbs).

What I don’t like about it is that the lack of variation isn’t great for maintaining a diverse gut microbiome, that the inputs seem to be cheap and that may be reflected in their quality and ultimately healthfulness, and that my gut didn’t tolerate it super well and in particular it made me a bit bloated and gassy. I would absolutely not be able to tolerate it during a workout, just the thought of that makes me feel a bit queasy.

I’d like to take the credit for that one but it’s from Futurama.

Like others here have said, I use it as a quick meal alternative when I am really rushed. The cacao flavor is actually pretty tasty.

SOylent.??? It reminds me of “Soylent Green” :frowning: soylent green is people!

Its a dumb TechBro fad.

Lee Hutchinson at Ars Technica has written a dozen or so articles on his and others’ experience with Soylent; here’s a link to the most recent from last fall and it has links to the others - https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/the-psychology-of-soylent-and-the-prison-of-first-world-food-choices/

dont think many will get that ;o)
