I am trying to learn how to run with a faster turnover. I am trying to average 88 to 90 steps per minute. I like to run to music, but I have noticed that I speed up (to a certain extent) and slow down (way too much) depending on what song is playing. I’d like to put together a list of strong 88 to 90 beats per minute songs. Any favorites to get me started?
Andi
90? Nah, you should kick it into high gear at 180bpm with some harsh tasty beats, drum and bass style.
or maybe 1000bpm
seriously, I try to pick ones that are around 120bpm, and I can usually time my steps based on that. you just have to time it to step every 3/4 of a beat, which isn’t as hard as it sounds if there’s enough rhythm in it.
My running club has an ongoing list of these. Here’s what we have collected so far:
Flying Home - Charlie Barnet & His Orchestra
Lost for Words - Crescest City Maulers (Swing This, Baby!)
Twisting By The Pool - Dire Straits (Money for Nothing)

Are you using the Polar RS800SD shich shows your running cadence?
I don’t know many of them - only the Red Hot Chili Pepper songs. Most of the other runners in my club are at least ten years older than I (we do have two other college students) - I am the baby of the ‘family’!
Macarena.
Try to get that outta yer head NOW - ha ha!!!
Well, I am an old trad/folkie – play as well, so most Irish and Scottish reels come in at 180 bpm - so they are perfect for running to. I f you want something trad you have ton’s of choices (Battlefield band, Bothy Band, etc). If youa re looking for something with a bit more modern percussion - try some of the Cape Bretoners - Ashely McIsaac or Natalie McMaster - or my current favorite from Scotland - the Porridgemen - more bagpipe baby!!
“Waiting Room” - Fugazi
.
Google “Podrunner”, they have a bunch of mixes at varying cadences
.
Here are a few more songs…

Great list! And I do know, and love most of those songs!
Along the same vein, here’s some more that I think would fit…
Serious Duffy 89 bpm
Hands Up Black Eyed Peas 87 bpm
Me Gustas Tu Manu Chao 88 bpm
Like a Feather Nikka Costa 90 bpm
I’m working on my running lists right now on RDIO. Here’s a link to one of them http://rd.io/x/QKKlL0c7dg and you should be able to easily find the others when you are there. I’d love to ‘collaborate’ on one of these lists. Just set this http://rd.io/x/QKKlL0c5Qw up to do just that!
Enjoy! Jim
Put in 90 bpm. It’ll list all of the songs around there, in terms of popularity.
last year during a grim winter of treadmill work i found this program (not app) that analyzes the tempo of all your music, and adds BPM to each MP3’s metadata. you can then sort your collection by tempo. pretty awesome.
