So, to ensure we Americans never offend anyone, particularly fanatics
intent on killing us, airport security screeners will no longer be allowed
to profile certain people. They must conduct random searches of
80-year-old women, little kids, airline pilots with proper identification,
secret agents who are members of the President’s security detail, 85-year
old Congressmen with metal hips, and Medal of Honor winning and former
**Governor Joe Foss, but treat Muslim Males between the ages 17 and 40 exactly **like Grandma and Grandpa because of profiling is wrong.

Nope, sometimes profiling is RIGHT!

You miss the real advantage to not profiling. Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nicols, Lee Harvey Oswald and others who committed assasinations and terrorist attacks did not fit your profile.

When I travel alone I often get scrutinized. The last time I came back from Mexico I was questioned and searched (no body cavity searches thank goodness) three times.

I don’t know why other than I must fit some profile. I don’t really care as it increases my confidence in the safety of the flight I’m about to get on.

I say you are absolutelt right. Agree 100%.

I didn’t realize that any of the foks you mentioned had hijacked a plane or had an opportunity to be profiled. Look at the Israelis and their airport profiling. Don’t recall they have ever had a plane hijacked and taken down. It is not rocket science, just some common sense. Identify the high risk attributes by age, country of origin, method of payment, frequent flyer #, profession, etc… and apply it.

Barefoot

hmmmmm … please profile the following events for me:

  1. On August 6 and 9, 1945, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed by the first atomic bombs used in warfare.

  2. 1963 John F. Kennedy was shot and killed

  3. (1961) 1964 - 1975 War in Vietnam

  4. 1980 John Lennon was shot and killed

  5. 1983 Invasion of Grenada

  6. 28th of February in 1986, 23.20 the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme was killed in central Stockholm

  7. In 2000 BOTOX came over the world and deform lots of VIPs and pseudoVIPs …

huh?

Could you have picked a more disparate group of events?

shall I ?

Man, it is possible to ask questions where every answer is: male muslime extremists.
It is also possible find questions where the answer is: anybody else except male muslime extremists.

BUT you can’t generalize this! This is cherry picking in politics. capisce?

So tell us oh wise one. How would YOU decide who is a potential threat? I only see three possiblitiies

  1. Search and check everyone

  2. Search and check no one

  3. Search and check those that fit the profile

Your examples are not valid. Yes you can make up any scenario in which the correct answer is “Muslim.” The fact is right now we are engaged in the GWOT and unfortunately like it or not we must pick and choose who is searched. Is it unfortunate that 99.9% of muslims are innocent? Of course it is but thats the way it is.

I got 4 out of 12 right. I really thought that Richard Simmons was involved in some sort of terroristic activities in the 90s – something like “bombing to the oldies”.

Ken Jennings

The issue’s with profiling.

If the shoe fits or if it looks like a duck etc.

Sure in many cases “profiling” may appear racist, sexist or any other type of ist but if you have some solid evidence that a certain group or groups are part of problem of some sort then you need to concentrate on that group. I certainly don’t agree with putting the blinders on and ignoring all other possibilties but concentrating on one area is not necessarily doing that.

Frankly we all profile on a daily basis whether we’ll admit it or not.

~Matt

No profile will fit every ter. Nor can any profile account for mental deficiency. You will never get everybody, but you can get at least a few if you do a threat assessment. Maybe we ought to stop calling it “profiling” and call it “threat assessment”, because thats what it is. Might take awhile for the PCers to catch on.

Or…lets say The FBI and CIA do a competant job…Then there would have been no 9-11 and this profiling conversation wouldnt have to happen.

Most serial Killers are whitye males. Do you mind if we search your house and dig up your basement and your yard looking for cut up bodies of young boys?

Murder and terrorism are not the same issue. While one encompasses the other, they are done for different reasons. You cannot equate one with the other. A suicide bombing is not a sex killing.

J

Not so sure 9/11 wouldn’t have happened anymore than doing profiling now will 100% guarantee it won’t happen again. I think the point is to reduce the chances. We could go on about the ineptness of the CIA but that would require a whole other thread about who was at the helm and drastically neutered their capabilities during the 1990’s.

I was thinking more about sticking all you liberals in a camp. Be much easier to keep track of all your anti US activites;)

I agree with profiling 100%. This does not limit itself to terror, but it should be used in all law enforcement with rules. The use of profiling can be abused and should be used with strict rules. I used to work for a major world wide rental company as a manager and we went through hours and hour and hours of classes about not using appearance to make decisions on who we did business with. Fair enough.

It was interesting though that in the real world that many of our problem customers fit a profile. Not all but many. Profiling doesn’t mean that all people who commit terror acts are muslim, but rather the percentages say they are. I have a book at home, for the life of me can’t remember the name, waiting to read that talks about how it is illegal to profile on planes. Just stupid.

Good profiling isn’t about singling out one charecteristic but looking at a group of them and assigning probability

Maybourne, we already have detained them in special camps just not entire families. In the other thread about PA abuse everyone is up an arms about shipping people off to Gitmo and prisons without due process so we must be detaining them.

I am not sure how I understand how gangs, blacks and Mexicans figure into the conversation though?

I agree 100% -

And for whom ever said “oh yeah Pearl Harbor”…

Dont forget that during WWII the US had “camps” full of Japs cause we did not want them running around uncontrolled. Only thing not the same as German caps was we fed and did not kill all the Japs in our camps.
