It is short, UCI rules dictate a limit on the reach, and it isn’t enough for people his size.
It is the reason he is using mech shifting, gives you a few more CM. Next year it won’t so his life will suck more.

next year they measure to the end of the extensions on all shifters, whereas currently they measure to the bolt about which the shifter ends rotate on mech shifters.
This will actually affect my wife negatively too, and she is only 5’10"
I suppose she could get the free exemption assuming that actually happens consistently. Supposedly next year you can get either 5cm extra saddle forwardness or 5cm extra length (but not both) no questions asked.

They want to prevent people from ending up recumbent or semi recumbent and haven’t figured out a simple way to achieve it.
So, there are these crazy rules that don’t work out well for tall people.

How about 2cm or saddle forward and 3cm of reach?
Ha! That would be fun but no.
So current rules allow these same 5cm exemptions (you can do 1 but not both) BUT a judge has to look at it and say ‘yes or no’ based on subjective evaluation of how your position ends up.
So next year you get less reach (bad) but no questions asked exemption (good)… supposedly.

When is the subjective evaluation made? Do you have to incur the entry fee, travel costs and time commitment to have the Judge make the call at the event, or can you get a ruling in advance?
