Seriously, wonderful gadgets! Such terrible software. I had managed to use the old ANT+ until I bought the new computer and with it W10, now it seems I’m stuck with Express. Is there a way to download from our watches directly to 3rd party software? Eg. Golden Cheetah?
I was just thinking how much I loved Garmin Express for auto-uploading from all my Garmin devices to Garmin Connect.
I do believe it saves the .FIT files somewhere on your hard drive so you can import them into GC. Or you can export them from Connect. Express doesn’t delete the workouts, so if GC has an import function, it should work. WKO+ does for me.
Best I have done so far is to have tapiriik put the files somewhere convenient for me to go into the software from there.

There’s the problem, not the web-based Garmin software…
He’s got problems with local Garmin software. Probably ANT+ stick driver or whatever userland app in the chain after the driver is responsible for downloading the workout data. He’s absolutely right. Garmin makes some kickass hardware. But their software developers are idiots. The management chain are probably hardware people so they don’t know how to hire good software developers, or how to recognize that they have bad ones.
They aren’t alone. Most hardware centric shops have horrendously bad software. Generally speaking, take that CD that comes with your hardware, break it in half, and look see what computer nerds use instead. Look on user forums.
That’s odd, as I was having issues today. Garn=min recognizes my 910, but then I try and download my Garmin swim, and it says no ANT+ stick is there, or it can’t find the Swim watch. Really funky stuff…
I read somewhere that computers see the watches as a USB device and you can just grab the .fit files you need and upload to Strava. My watch won’t be here for a few days so I’ll test then.
Do you have an android device with an ANT+ chip? You can use this

I was having so many problems uploading 910 workouts through express I had to get a Bluetooth 920 which works great through connects. Garmin’s sales strategy is working well.
… Garmin … their software developers are idiots …
Yup.
I use sportablet uploader on an android phone with ant+, and antfs-cli on an Ubuntu linux workstation with an ant stick. No windows or Garmin express in sight.
I don’t really want another uploader - I just want a way to get my data from my devices (a 910xt & Garmin Swim) to my training log software w/o relaying it through Garmin’s mess.

That looks like a winner. I never upload anything because I just don’t take the time to hook up the ant+ USB stick. I have an Xperia phone so I’ll be using this app for sure.
+1 to sportablet! Excellent, reliable, and simple app, and the developer is very accessible in the app’s forums. All-around great experience!
My experience with SportTablet Uploader is that I had to upload each workout one by one. So any multiple workout days all things were loaded easily to my tablet but I could only further upload to GC or TP by selecting one file at a time, and that was with the paid-for version of the software. Annoying, but still more reliable than trying to get my computer to play nicely with my 910. Seemed clumsy.

i havent touched a windows machine in over 4 years (and when i did, it was a work-owned desktop). and i have never tried an android device. macOS w/ iOS makes things plug ‘n’ play. things (hardware and software) just work.

It does, but I believe it auto-deletes them once it sends them to connect.
For a couple months, my Garmin Express install was failing to upload to Connect, so I sleuthed around and found all the .FIT files (which don’t have a .FIT extension), and then could do what I wanted with them.
Unfortunately, it started working with connect again at some point later (with no changes from myself), and then it would auto-delete the files once they made it to connect, giving me a very short window to steal them.
Anyone else having issues with their 920 not uploading via Bluetooth to the Garmin Connect mobile app on an iPhone?

Both the ones I mentioned do exactly that. Uploading to Garmin I connect is quite optional. Export to fit or gpx for other purposes is just as easy. Not sure what your software requires as input, of course.
does garmin still make the ant agent available on their website? awhile ago I was having problems with garmin swim and 910 xt not communicating and uninstalled garmin express in favour of ant agent and haven’t looked back. But I use a mac.
