Say a person had a Bianchi fixie…nice one at that…King headset, carbon bullhorn bars, F99 stem, carbon fork…no brakes…
Say that person was to take the fixie and a camera and put it out in public…granted…with out a front QR in the hub…would it be illegal to “let” someone steal the bike on video knowing that they were going to with certainty crash not knowing it was a fixie and with out brakes - plus no front QR in place?
I am just curious…I think that it could be a funny experiment.
I had a Schwinn hybrid commuter. Decent bike. Took it to a university campus and hung a sign on it asking a student to “steal this bike” and after graduation to do the same.
Of course I didn’t sabatoge the bike the way you’re suggesting.
If the Chicago 'burbs are anything like Vancouver, odds are that your potential thief would know it’s a fixie. They’re that trendy. Having said that, the front skewer trick stands a good chance of working. It remains to be seen whether you could be charged with malice and intent to injure, or something like that.
a friend of mine leaves his fixie unlocked outside shops when he goes inside.
it hasn’t happened yet but he reckons it will be great when someone tries to steal it.
do it, when you catch the guy and bust his A$#, tell the cops that you took the skewer out to prevent it from getting stolen. (dont show them or even mention any video taken).
I’m thinking that your glee would quickly turn into regret as you find yourself the subject of a lawsuit. Remember, the theif is looking for the easy way out…

The trouble with all of the really good ideas like this is that they have already been tried. And the idea guy was convicted.
How is this for an analogy: Say you have this really neat cabin in the woods. Trouble is, all the local stoners keep breaking into and wreaking it. Wouldn’t it be a good idea to set up a shotgun on a trip wire so the next time they broke in, and only when they broke in, you would know with certainty that they would get a load of buckshot in the face?
It’s called a spring gun and was found brutally illegal a long, long time ago.
On the plus side, having the winning video on America’s Funniest Home Videos might get you enough money to pay off the judgment against you by the scumbag thief.
Where i’m from you do technically have “an obligation not to perform harm”, so i’m pretty sure you could be sued. i’m not say’n you shouldn’t do it and post the video here.
THIS IS NOT TO BE CONSTRUED AS LEGAL ADVICE and is provided for entertainment purposes only. Really do not see the problem. Not even close to the spring gun analogy. Video is really no different than having a security camera at your house. If the person that borrows your bike fails to check to make sure the QR is tight seems like negligence on his or her part rather than yours. Hell I did that to myself once when I took my mountain bike off of a bike rack in college and did not realize it was loose until I went over a curb and watched the front wheel bounce a second or so before I split the forks and my face. Unlikely that jury would bury you on this one…not to mention you can always say that you are crazy and should not be held responsible
His “experiment” is now on a public forum for the entire world to read.
His “intent” to injure is now on a public forum for the entire world to read.
His “post” is now forever in lots of harddrives all over the world.
When the thief gets injured as a direct result of this “experiment”, I forsee the original poster losing alot of money!!!
And if the guy would die from his injuries then murder charges and probalbly qualify as first degree or even attempted murder if he gets hurt.
And the first year torts memory award goes tooo … moreymadness!
Do you remember the cries of outrage that the poor farm owner could possibly lose? I taught this class a bunch of times and the bleeding hearts were rarely in the majority.
Edit: I just looked at your profile. You are in the thick of it. How goes the battle?

This might get you creativity points on a law school exam but I think that it would more likely play out like… the bike thief falls off and gets hurt or not and then chip runs over and laughs then the police come and charge him with stealing the bike. I imagine that if the thief “informs” the police that chips bike was hard to ride/poorly maintained/sabotaged and this caused his injuries after he stole it they would laugh…
In your senario the thief then retains counsel/ files suit, engages in discovery including the hiring of a private investigator and computer person to go through chips computer and find this evidence that he thought it likely that if someone stole his bike they would crash which would prove what exactly?
I think it is likely that if someone stole my bike and tried to ride it with the front wheel locked they would crash…so what…how exactly does this amount to “first degree murder”, the intentional killing of another if I remember correctly?
