So if you say one of your friends is "Hitler"

presumably implying they are acting dictatorially and jokingly give them the German salute, is that antisemitism?

I could see saying they might be a bit insensitive, but is that really antisemitic?

It’s really anti-Hitler or anti-dictator, no?

I remember at a Halloween party in the 1980’s a guy dressed up as Hitler. The funny thing was that he was Jewish.

As I’ve stated elsewhere, people get too worked up when you pull the HIIITTTTLHUUUURRRR, card. They would like it to mean that you are comparing somebody to absolute evil, and that can be the case. But it is also a common icon that many can relate to in terms of psychopathology, poor leadership, genocide, authoritarianism, cultive personality, etc. It can even be used as a comparative example of a leader who villainizes a group for personal gain. Only a couple of these imply absolute evil.

I don’t know if it is antisemitic, I’m not Jewish or German, but I find it extremely offensive when one compares something trivial like your friends actions to Hitler. You are tivializing the horrible things Hitler did by making such a comparison.

We should not ignore history and should recall the horrors he unleashed so that we will alway be ready to stop them. Looking at what he did and trying to avoid those same mistakes in our own era is important. But trivial comparisons are not appropriate.

cultive personality

anyway, i wouldn’t automatically call it antisemitic so much as tasteless. and, frankly, unimaginative. there are better names to call someone.

A buddy of mine did this when I was in college, back in 2001. He was always out for that shock factor, another costume of his was a bathrobe, shaving cream on his face and shower cap…with a pretty massive, exposed dildo.

Actually I just missed the error. I know it is cult of personality, like the song. But sometimes I write things how they sound phonetically. But I could level the same charge against you. I misspelled a word, but didn’t use it incorrectly. Nor do I recall using the term so frequently to warrant the Mandy Patinkin meme.

Lighten up Clarence.

It’s “lighten up FRANCIS.” CAN"T WE GET ANY FREAKING THING RIGHT IN HERE TODAY?!

“I don’t know if it is antisemitic, I’m not Jewish or German…”

Yet another word we use incorrectly or poorly almost all the time.

Not anti semitic. Anti semitic ( as commonly used today ) would be flashing him the nazi salute and then saying “you dumb k*ke”.

However to Slowguy’s point, not all Semites are Jews. There’s a good explanantion here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semitic

I’ve now done my pedantic deed of the day

It’s definitely douchey. Especially when you add the salute.

It’s “lighten up FRANCIS.” CAN"T WE GET ANY FREAKING THING RIGHT IN HERE TODAY?!

AT THIS POINT, WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE!!!

HOISTED!!! And it’s BY your own petard.

You’re on a roll.

I thought the pink text was implied.

I did wonder, but then I thought WTF, he got Francis wrong.

I do find if weird that people throw out the word “Nazi” quite a bit.
That teacher is a Nazi.
That sales guy was a complete Nazi.
Our CEO is a Nazi.

What do any of these have to do with the killing of Jews?

Why not say “That teacher would have been a great slave owner”
“That sales guy probably keeps a bunch of n-words at home”
Our CEO would buy and sell Africans like a hobby.

“What do any of these have to do with the killing of Jews”

There was just a little bit more to Nazism than just killing Jews.
