So... has anyone used Sour Patch Kids as nutrition?

I’m a new triathlete, and have been doing super sprint distance races. So I haven’t needed anything in the way of nutrition (or really hydration, apart from the few swigs of Gatorade I grab at the run aid stations near the end of the race). But I’ve signed on for the 70.3 at Tremblant next June. So I’m going to have to learn to consume… something. I have enough trouble swallowing water by the time I get off the bike (my body chooses breathing over swallowing at that point) so the idea of gel or goo of any kind makes me gag a little. From what I can gather, I need some salt and some sugar in a form that’s easy to consume and digest. I think Sour Patch Kids are the bomb, and if I could cover some of my nutrition bases that way, well… I think going 70.3 miles would be that much more enjoyable. lol Has anyone tried to use them as nutrition? I think I’ll eventually get a water bottle with a straw for between my aero bars so I can sip while I’m on the bike at longer distances… hoping that’ll cover the hydration part.

No. But I highly recommend trying it. Please report back with your findings!

Also - you may want to consider Gushers (if they’re still made). Then you’ll cover nutrition and hydration at the same time!

It’d be perfect in small quantities due to being all sugar, but too much and the sour from the acids they put in might be a little rough on your mouth and stomach. Swedish fish would be a good candy to use. The only difference between that and the various gummy sports nutrition are added electrolytes and other sugars.

Yup, but I am from Brooklyn…

Haven’t used Sour Patch Kids - but religiously sucked on Jolly Ranchers hard candies on the bike and run during 70.3 & 140.6. Kept a baggie in my back pocket and would eat one every 1/2 hour or so. Candy… yumm…

I carry Gushers on my IM runs…those things are a sugary kick in the nuts if you only have a mile or so to go!

I supplement on course nutrition with peanut butter m and m’s. so good!!!

No, but my secret weapon is Rice Crispy bars. I get the small 100 calorie packs, easy to eat and never have stach issues with them.

my fiance and cousin both swear by gummy bears at the end of a marathon.

Sweet mother of pearl – jolly ranchers? Gummy bears? Swedish fish? How did I not hear about this sport sooner!!!

You’re better off getting your sugar from fruit. REAL fruit. Not the artificially flavored colored preservative filled gummy candy.

Combo breaker

I always have one of those Knorr Chicken Bullion cubes. Suck on that thing like a jolly rancher… it lasts as long and will take care of your salt cravings forever.

I have used Swedish Berries on the bike, and know a number of other people that do as well. I enjoy them and they’re a lot cheaper than ‘tri specific’ nutrition.

Gummy worms make for a nice mix up on long training rides.

Swedish fish…genius.

I’ve been using Swedish Fish as ride nutrition for a few years - buy the big bulk bags and fill a ziploc baggie from that. Also recently switched to those applesauce pouches instead of gels, much cheaper and they seem to work just as well.

I’ve never used actual Sour Patch kids, but I recently switched to getting my Infinit custom drink mix formulated as a concentrate (~500cal per gel flask) and it tastes just like a sour patch candy. Love the flavor, I’m getting more calories in on the run than ever before with no absorption problems, and get my calories, electrolyte, etc all in one product.

Yup, I have them to break up taste buds during long rides.

Your cousin and fiance are absolutely correct. Sour Patch Kids and most sour coated candies are good but the sour citric acid coating can cause digestive problems if too much is consumed.
Swedish Fish are also great but too many consumed can cause constipation.

No shit?
