So, did I miss the announcement of the location of the 70.3 WC for 2017?

I thought it was going to be in June. I understand no new races announced this year for NA (first time for that in…what…ever?), but I would have thought WTC would have wanted this one out there to generate some interest. Maybe they are busy now with the sale?

You haven’t missed it. Final selection down to St George, Lake Placid and Chattanooga. Rumint says it will be announced before or at the Austria 70.3 WC. I am speculating that St George will get the nod.

Also, the year is not over. There is serious discussion about a new 70.3 just north of Columbus, Ohio. And some talk of Ironman Alaska but there doesn’t seem to be a lot behind that one.

Anyone hear any chatter about a west coast replacement for IM Tahoe? Ive heard the Alaska chatter, mainly on here. Rumors of Bend here and there, and I have even heard a mention or two of San Luis Obispo (central coast california). But I am sure there isnt much behind any of those.

Is that the old Albany Challenge race? I have no clue about Ohio geography but have a vague recollection that the RD said the race would come back under a new banner.

And I knew the selection was down to those three. I just thought the decision was due earlier. St. George would be an interesting choice.

IMAK? Where do they get 2000 volunteers? I have a hard time believing that WTC would put a race up there. It seems they do better with races within a days drive of major metro areas. I also have a hard time believing they will leave California again without putting some full distance race there.

Somewhere I read it was to start at Alum Creek and finish in Delaware Ohio at Ohio Wesleyan’s stadium. I’m not sure where I read that, but I know I emailed a link to my family (I’m from Delaware, OH). I’ll see if I can find the link and post it.

… I also have a hard time believing they will leave California again without putting some full distance race there.

California is too hard of a place to put on an inviting long course triathlon. Getting that much road closure for an entire day just doesn’t mesh with everything else going on.

SLO area might be one of the best chances.

Most of CA is tourist destination, and doesn’t much need to bring in hard road closures to bring in a relatively small number of people.

What about 3 loops out and back. You only need to close 20K of road for that (but you need a wide road to avoid a draft fest). Seems like the easy option is to convert Vineman to a WTC 140.6 or what about Santa Cruz. HITS also seems to be able to host some IM distance things in California?

Unfortunately, we are now a year out from the tentative race date. This one may be on the same path to nowhere as the Hilton Head 70.3.

And close to Challenge Cedar Point both in distance (2.5 hours apart) and time of year (Aug vs Sept).

I don’t doubt that WTC wants to put the hurt on Challenge. But they aren’t competing (in this area) until they announce the race. They typically like to put new ones on the calendar at least a year in advance, although for a 70.3 I think they would be fine if they announce before the end of 2015.

not only is that an old article, but I thought Meskfessel’s comment that they only do annual events and not “one and done deals” was pretty funny. Admittedly, there have not been many, but at least NYC and Princeton come to mind as one-and-doners, and National Harbor was not even one before it was done. There have certainly been many international “one-and-dones”.

Still…it will be interesting to see if WTC does add any new races in the US or Canada. The fact every IM in North America is still open for 2016 suggests they have adequately met demand.

No no…you got it wrong. Every North America athlete is first waiting to see if they can get into IM florida and IM Arizona. Once those two sell out, the others will gradually start selling out! It seems like Europe has Frankfurt+Austria+Barcelona (and Roth). Once all those sell out, then the others gradually fill. We have the same, although I am surprised that LP is yet to sell out. I guess way too many east coast additions now.

Did you forget the pink font?

Well, IMCDA was down 400 finishers from last year, Tahoe is about to fold, and Whistler did not sell out (and is down about 1000 finishers from when it was a Penticton race). So, I am not so sure that the lack of sell outs is just an East Coast thing. But having said that, it would seem that things are in almost perfect equilibrium. Many races do sell out. Almost none sell out instantly. If you are considering a race, you have some time to decide, and many to choose from. It would seem to me that this is the Goldilocks scenario. So, to my point that demand is adequately met, I do not see how I got it wrong.

I kind of left out the pink font. I think you are correct. The current supply-demand is just a about right. As a consumer, I like it. Do you also think that at $700 things are getting a bit too high. Do you think at $550, more sell out instantly or more unfilled races end up with high enough numbers to offset the price delta ? I think to some degree WTC is better off with 15% less entrants with 15% higher pricing. It should be easier to manage a smaller race.

Getting far afield of my OP, but I do not think IM is price elastic. I just cannot imagine many people saying “I would pay 550 for an IM, but not 700.” IM is a big bucket item and big bucket items are not generally price sensitive. I doubt the higher price has scared off many people. As long as people are willing to pay 2000 bucks for wheels that MAY give them 4-5 minutes on an IM bike split, the idea that an extra 200 bucks may keep them away from a race seems silly to me. But yes, I would rather pay more and get a good experience. I only have LP as an experience, but that was an amazing experience well worth every penny every time I did it, including the down pour in 2008, the heat of 2009 or the near perfect day in 2011. I recently spent 30 bucks to do a charity century ride and felt ripped off. Its all about value, not relative price.

So 2015 WC has now come and go. No news on the 2017 Location?

Love to see it Placid BUT only if they run the bike loop clockwise (opposite direction of the current IMLP loop).
