I’ve been running and cycling fairly recreationally/seriously for about 5 years. I now run about 50 miles per week. 27 year old male – never really had a problem with my knees or injuries or anything. I’ve raced 6 marathons.
I just picked up snowboarding in the past month and went for my 3rd session over the past weekend. Boarded all day on Sat and ran about 18 miles on Sun. During the run, I didn’t feel any injury or anything. Differences between this an normal run are that I was at a bit of altitude 7000 ft and I know I got dehydrated during the run.
This morning (Monday) my knees are killing me. Mostly right above the knee (kinda like IT issues maybe). Is this likely to be from having my feet in a fixed position on the snowboard? Anyone else have problems snowboarding? Or maybe it’s the dehydration somehow…
Aside from any impact issues, snowboarding generally puts a different strain on your knees…as does any NEW sport. Just take a little getting used it. I went indoor go-karting a few weeks ago (in the fast cars) and got the best ab/ob workout thise year!
The good new is that snowboarding is not as damaging as ski related stress. I’ve been snowboarding (racing) for 16 years (pro for 4 of those). I’m riding plate bindings at 55/50 degrees which is more like a water ski than a snowboard.
The stress may have to do with your stance set-up. If you are riding soft boots, don’t mount your bindings at 0/0. Either move both forward (23/15) or go duck stance at 12/-8.
The only thing i can think of is that you fell on your knees a couple times but really didnt pay attention to it. The little sub painful bumps add up to some pain and swelling the next day. Thats what happened to me when i was learning. Ive been boarding for about 8 years. The only time my knees bother me is if i fall them alot, or twist funny and wrench them. If you didnt fall on them at all, id take smity’s advice and add some angle on them, also make sure your stance isnt too wide. That would also put pressure on your knees. My stance is about as wide as the distance from the ground to mid knee cap (21") and my stance is about 13 front and -3 in the back. Stick with it, im sure your body will adjust to it and have fun
Smitty, i could always use some free swag. Im a broke college kid
