Smartphone mount on the bike

Geeky question. Does anyone have any experiece with mounting their smartphone (Treo, BlackBerry, etc.) on their handlebars for long rides?

Thanks in advance, Richard in Toronto

i hope you’re ready to get flamed.

I hope not.

Non-flame-retardant Richard

I ride my bike to get away from my phone!

I heard that there are people around who have survived without being around their phone every minute of the day.

Crazy.

Mounted on the handlebars? Planning on checking your email?

I take my Treo (powered off) with me too, but its tucked into a small, flat waist pack that I wear under my jersey…along with my ID, some cash and a credit card.

You’ve gotta F-ing be kidding me. Cycling is already a dangerous enough activity. Checking your email, voicemail, or SMS messages while cycing would be a very stupid thing to do.

Not very smart to mount a phone on the bike
.

maybe he’d like to use a gps feature that his phone offers

.

Well seeing as he is from Toronto and seeing as we are starting to go into the winter season, he MAY be asking how to set something up for his long training rides indoors. Something to consider.
If that isn’t the case, then yeah, you are nuts.

map your route ahead of time and print out a map like I do.

screw the phone. Even if you are on a trainer, I am sure you can miss a phone call and call the person back in an hour

As others said, doing this outdoors is just dumb. On the trainer, I find it pretty easy to use my Treo when I’m in the aero bars. Last week, for example, I had a long moderate session to do on the trainer, and I used my Treo to check into Slowtwitch. Suddenly, spending lots of time on this site was a good thing. Alll of the marginal threads that I don’t have time for at work were now fair game. The time just flew by. I only do this on easy to moderate sessions. Otherwise, I would sweat too much on it and probably drop it on the garage floor.

I have my secretary carry mine
she rides behind my in a non drafting mode
singing to me as we go

Dirt.

I just mounted my ZUNE (to watch videos/TV shows) on my aerobars with a clip I bought at the auto section at Targhetto. Works like a charm…look around.

Good luck.

I am a BlackBerry user and would love to find something like this. I always carry it with me, and having a way to put it in plain sight would be nice, especially if you have the GPS function.

Ciao,

I often have to be ‘on-call’ when I ride. I now have a blue tooth ear piece. I can keep my TREO in a plastic back in my jersey pocket and answer if i have to. If I could get a blue tooth power meter, speedometer and cadence meter, then I might mount it to me stem.

smartphone?
that i don’t get…

i understand some phone issues. i carry my cell when riding, but it’s for emergencies, pretty much. it would be nice to have a bike computer with caller id, that way i would know what’s up when the phone rings. but my plan is to get a second phone, with minimal hours, or a pre-paid, and only give the number to certain people.

but a smartphone? so that you can check your email, coordinate your calendar, etc? (check the NYSE?) no thanks.

You gotta be kidding me. If you must have it with you on a ride, put it in your jersey pocket and put it on vibrate (so you can feel it over the music from your iPod).
