Smart bike people ... can you help me find this bike? kinda long and rambling

I think it’s time (finally) for a real tri bike, after too long on a pure road bike (Merckx Team Sc). I came to tri thru road racing, I’ve got tons of miles in my legs on a road bike. I ride a 48 cm sloping Merckx with 55 cm toptube, 73 deg sta, 120 stem. It fits me well, I’ve ridden the same basic dimensions for a long time. Me: 5-9, 160, longish torso, stubby legs, pretty flexible.

the bike i want must have the following:

  • steep STA of 78-79
  • TT length of 52 (give or take a wee bit)
  • low, but not super low, front end
  • two water bottle bosses (down and seattube)
  • tight rear end, with or without a cutout
  • horizontal drop outs
  • 700c wheels (i’ve got a bunch of wheels from the road bike)
  • price: $2000-2500

i would like it to also have (these aren’t gotta haves like above):

  • sloping toptube (for my stubby short legs)
  • non-carbon rear end
  • black (my Merckx is flashy, I’d like this one to be stealthy)
  • as much ultegra 10 as possible
  • real wheels, not pseudo race wheels that look fast but are merely heavy gimicks.

Does this bike exist. Surely it does. Please help me find it.

Take a look at the Javelin “Narni.” Sounds like it’s in the price range (might be a bit over). Definitely a good bike.

PS - Have you tried Lucille’s yet??

P2SL, size 53, 78 degrees, black, but only one water bottle boss…

$2299 with Ultegra 10.

QR Caliente, size 53, but needs a paint job and the top tube may be too high.

Lucille’s … oh yeah. tried it. love it. cute little CO hippy girl waitresses and killer cajun grub. how could you not love it?

i was in boulder the other day and saw a guy in full discovery geek wear, bike and all. first thought … it’s boulder. bet he didnt have to buy the kit.

and … armstrong’s dog is at the wife’s place of employment. i met her for lunch today and one of the docs was taking rex for a walk. does this count as a celebrity sighting? it’s funny. the hospital buzz is all about armstrong’s puppy dog. he wasnt wearing a livestrong collar.

I would say that based on the six degrees of Kevin Bacon game, you officially had a brush with fame. Cut off a lock of the dog’s hair and put it on e-bay. $750 minimum bid!

how are things in vegas? did you pick up a javelin? the bikes look good on the website, but I don’t know anything about them. I’m not sure if there are any dealers out here. i’m going to get something this winter. i dont know what yet, obviously.

I spoke to Jeff at Javelin today. My bike is being sent out as we speak. Terry at The Bike Shop is putting it together for me, and I’ll have it next week. They sell them at a place in Boulder if you’re interested.

I can’t ride it until my freaking collar bone is better though.

I’ll have a very detailed full write-up of the product and the company once I get my new ride. I can’t wait.

PS - Check out the Boulder-Dushanbe Tea House. I think it’s on Walnut. Amazingly cool place in Boulder.

come on, man. details. what did you get? the arcolo is cool looking, but i bet out of my price range.

I like what you’re looking for but good luck finding two bottles in a sloping top tube bike. Check out the Cannondale Tri bikes. I loved my IM5000, god it was a fast bike. You might need to add a Thomson setback post to get past 80 degrees but it’s stock at 78 degrees. Aluminum rear end but I think it only had one water bottle mount on the seat tube…

I’m on a P3sl now, great bike but only one bottle mount. I’d say a P2sl in black would be perfect but again no dual bottle mounts.

The Cube Aerium satisfies many of the points on your wish list.
It does come with a 75-76 seat tube angle but with a Thompson seatpost (supplied with the frame and fork) you’re up around the 77-78 range. It has a compact frame, aero downtube and seatstays, two bottle holders and not silly low at the front.
Very well balanced ride.
Yet to see if they have modified it for 2006.

the cube looks pretty close to what i need. but i don’t sprechen the deutsch. are these bikes sold in the us?

I don’t think that they have a US dealer but try emailing the UK link who is listed as matthias@cube-bikes.de or use the phone. I suspect any one who picks up will be able to communicate with you.

but i don’t sprechen the deutsch.
If you need connections to Germany or someone for translations, just ask me. I’m from Nürnberg.

Quintana Roo Tequilo, sz. 53. If you move the saddle forward, or use the new forward clamp you can get, to put it at 78*, the top tube will be just under 52.

Two water bottle bosses, a cutout, horiz. dropouts, 700c, $2299 @ Trisports.com, pretty low (but not crazy) front end.

Dark grey, so almost black. It does have a carbon rear, but this gives you the nice aero seatstays of the higher end bikes, real spoked wheels, Ultegra 10 kit with FSA crank & Dura-Ace Rear Derailleur.

The sloping top-tube will be hard to find on a TT bike that. Giant has it, but they are slacker than you want and more expensive.

Dude, I feel your pain. I was looking for a long time at all the stock bikes, wishing for anything in 80* STA, super short chainstays on 650’s, and long front end. What I found was a bunch of bikes afraid to go anything steeper than 78 degrees, and made such that if you DID go steeper than that, the weight distrbution was REALLY screwed up. So… I looked at the custom builders. Tom Teesdale at Tet Cycles is one of the best priced builders, and he’ll do pretty much anything. Curtlo was right in there too. But these guys deal with round tubes mostly (they’ve got aero tubing, but it’s an upcharge – make up your mind if it’s worth it). James Frames does a tight rear end with a cutout in aluminum, and runs about $1100 for the frame.
