Slowtwitchers...Garmin 910xt or 810

I am looking at purchasing one of these 2 options. I mainly do triathlons. I plan on purchasing a set of Vector Pedals too. So what would you buy (910 or 810)and why?

I don’t like to use my 910xt on the bike (screen is too small for my liking), except in XTERRA races where my hand position on the bike is better and I don’t use power so it’s not as frequent that I look at it. The 810 is better for cycling but in a triathlon, it would be useless on the run, so really it comes down to where you plan to use the device in question.

Thank you, I will primarily use it in Tri and Tri training…so the 910 seems more logical. I am just not sure of its limitations…especially relating to P.M.

It works as well as the 810 (no mapping stuff, but the PM stuff should be the same).

I have the 910 and the 800. If you want the map features, the 800 is plain awesome when building a route. Being able to lay out an 80-100 mile ride and not having to think about the directions is great on a long ride. If that is not important, then the 910 will do just about the same, except, “I think” the 910 only allows for 3s and 30s power averaging, and not the 10s feature that the 800 offers. Personally, I prefer the 10s average. YMMV.

The 910 does offer 10s
.

I have both… Racing, running and swimming with the 910, racing and biking with the 810… I don’t like using the 910 to view bike metrics, especially during a race.

I don’t think I could go back to one device either.

Good to know. I haven’t looked at it in a while and when helping a friend who was still on 2.4 I did not see the 10s option. It must have been corrected in an update.

910 for triathletes
.

FR910XT for triathletes.

The only thing you won’t get from a Vector standpoint is Pedal Smoothness and Torque Efficiency. But, Vector doesn’t even transmit those today (nor is there a specific timeline), and once they do - nobody even know what to do with that data either (just like left/right data, but the FR910XT does capture that).

I’m using a 910 for racing and a 510 during training. I really like the screen size to watch power while training and better placement in front of bta bottle. I don’t use the quick release band on the 910 because of all the stories of losing them on the swim (search Slowtwitch). Screen is a little small and in awkward position on the wrist when in aero but not bad to see on run. I like the data from the swim and timing transitions.

I did look at the 810 before I bought my 510. I just didn’t need the additional navigation features or the even larger screen size.

Thank you folks for your input. My initial thoughts on the two are getting reinforced by your replies. It really seems that the 910xt will be my next investment over the 810. Maybe the 810 when I have a designated road bike.(mainly for the mapping features). I am sure the 910xt offers plenty of cycling data for someone of my level.

Your points are definately a concern. The quick release sounded very appealing. Losing my $$$data at the bottom of a lake does not.

You could just not use if for the swim.

I have a 310 and an 800. If I could only get 1 decide between the two you’ve identified, it would be the 910. Basically because that has all the swim metrics I want and run. Having only 4 fields visible on the run would be a bit of an issue for me but having it useful for all sports overrides that.

Now, I have seen a person do a ironman with a 500 for the bike and run. Not sure why they did,for the swim, if anything.

I did my first few multisport races (including a 70.3) with my Edge 500. On the swim it went under my cap, on the run it went in the leg pocket on my tri shorts.

To the OP: if it’s just one, go for the 910xt - it’s way more useful for multisport. Or go for the 310xt (or the Timex Global Trainer, but that’s got it’s own set of problems) and an Edge 500… you can still get both new, but for really good prices! Any Edge series device is so much nicer to have on the bike. I’d look into two devices if you can.

I completely agree on the edge units being awesome on the bike. I used solely a 310 then 910 for years and decided to pick up an 800 when the 810 came out to check out all the hype. I will not ride my bike with anything other than the 800. It’s really not that much bigger, packs so many more features, and is so much easier to navigate on the bike. Luckily, I have both an 800 and a 910 so best of both worlds. I’ll get double the bike data on the IMMT course this weekend!

Get the 910 now, and get the 810 next month…it’s gonna happen that way…how can you resist having both?

You are probably right!! Ive been in Triathlon for a little over 1 year now and used to be pretty Frugile with money. I still am Frugile however, if it comes to Tri or cycling…the need for speed and improvements somehow finds its way into Maslows Hierarchy of Needs and I just cant resist the NEED for something else. So I can definately see myself acquiring both devices…especially when I finish building a designated Roadie! For now…I will focus on 910xt and Vector as my next big purchases. YOLO…you only live once!!!
