When he was here we set up a stragedy to ride 5:10, but the conditions today are as fast as they have ever been at Hawaii, so his time is in line with his training. Now it is sub 8 minute miles he has to run for the rest of the day for his perfect race…
Monty, Stefan and I talked on Thursday and he wanted WIND WIND WIND. He said, “Dev, pray for wind”
I guess he did not get the wind, but he just went 4:58.
Speaking of sub 5, is Michelle Jone’s 4:54 a course record or did PNF go sub 4:50 once ?
Dev
I think Paula went 4:48 one year, we came off the bike together and I was a 4:50. At least that’s what my failing memory remembers.
Without looking it up, I believe PNF did a 4:49 or so one year…
Badman just rode 4:51 today !
Our boy has run 7:02 pace for the first 6 miles, he is either feeling like superman, or there will be a mushroom cloud puffing up somewhere around mile 20. Go KUS!!!
KUS thrives when conditions suck, when everyone else mentally caves. He got no wind on the bike, so now he is getting heat on the run and it is likely lighting a fire under his ass.

As another owner of a vintage Cervelo P2K (2001), I am glad to see to see this. I have the bike, now I just need to do some 50 hour training weeks.
Go kus
Triyoda, I have a 51 hour training week pre packaged for you. Next May 21-27, in Bourg D’Oisans France, at the base of Alpe d’huez, Glandon, Croix de Fer, Les Deux Alpes, Ornon, Galibier, Lauteret, Telegraph…
Alpes Irontour…
KUS will be there. Its built for a mountain goat like you.
Where do I sign up?
Once I get the accomodations and insurance issues sorted out for this Tour, I’ll have it up on the web. It will be a low cost tour. Get your ass there, feed yourself, and just pay for accomodations and some small incidentals including insurance. Basically, a self support training camp, with a bunch of posers, with your ass on the bike 3-8 hours per day, climbing 10,000 ft per day.
Monty, just went though 17 mile still doing 7:40 min pace:
TOTAL BIKE 112 mi. (4:58:54) 22.48 mph 115 FIRST RUN SEGMENT 5.2 mi. (6:42:38) 7:02/mile SECOND RUN SEGMENT 17.6 mi. (8:17:44) 7:40/mile Go KUS !
GOOOOO KUS!!!
Anything that big going that far that fast aughta have a stewardess on it ![]()
Outstanding!
Is that 7:40 for the segment, or for the entire run up to that point? Either way, he is going good. Most the pro guys had a 20 to 30 second fade from the first run to the second run, so he is not too far off. Gotta remember too that this guy is 6’7". Not exactly your typical ultra distance body type…
Yeah I agree. Looks like he has been racing with dual General Electric F404 Turbofans today !
Bunch of postive splitting posers ![]()
Looks like our man Kus spanked Larsen in the 35-39 age group. Something about 30 hour training weeks vs 6 hour training weeks :-).
Stefan, congrats. 58+4:58+3:16…any of these splits on their own is a very credible. Stringing them together back to back in Kona for a 9:22…that is something else.
Congrats
That was 1993 - it was, like today a dream day on the bike. Barely a puff of wind all the way. I was with Paula’s group for a bit on the bike and ended up riding 5:00 flat and was not even in the top 100 splits for the bike that day.

2 Stefan Kusurelis 151/115/111 36 00:58:05 04:58:54 03:16:55 09:22:56

Holy CRAP!!! 9:22 at Kona is beyond belief.
It musta been cuz he was riding a Cervelo. ![]()
And look - a big guy who can run too. WOW.
Great work Stefan, youdaMAN.
