The one thing I have bought that is magazine like in form over the last few years are Poison by Mark Twight but these contain essays and writings rather than “articles”
What does your strawman about energy into politics have to do with our very niche Slowtwitch subforum?
Everyone here is pretty much chill. In fact I’d wager 99% of the questions that were asked to the mods were very chill and honest.
There’s a saying about getting pissed at people for their valid reactions to how you’ve wronged them. What’s the issue with us being annoyed and curious about how they’ve address us and responded to our frustrations and feedback?
Also I’ve said this many times, and multiple times to you, don’t attribute emotions and excessive assumptions to 2D text that offers no tone or body language. I know I’ve said this to you multiple times over the years because you’re quick to jump onto people’s posts and tell them to “calm down” like you’re the superior.
Sometimes a post is just a post. We are chill, so give us the benefit of the doubt
I’m a member of multiple forums, plus Facebook. Not a single one has ever charged even a penny. Some are huge forums with thousands of active members and others are very small with only a handful. IMO, charging a fee to chit chat with people is beyond the pale. Are all the subforums on the Tri side going to be required to pay, or only the LR?
Eric’s busy so I will reply to you with all the love in the world.
The roll out to this was telling us that everything people were used to would be the same for free, with the very notable exception of this forum, with a heavy dose of “fuck those guys”. You didn’t use those words, but it was pretty damn close. And it is nearly identical to what was said, and how, when the forum software switched over.
It doesn’t take a rocket surgeon to know that if this is the only traditional part of the forum behind a paywall it will wither and die. The intention seemed pretty clear to finally kill this place off. And plenty of disdain from the powers that be towards this forum and the people here. If that was not your intentions, different words would be good.
I currently only have one website that I pay a subscription for, and that is because I forgot to cancel it last November. But it isn’t just the money. It is the reasons for the money and how it is asked for. Telling us to suck it while asking for money is not necessarily a great marketing strategy.
I get that your traditional partners don’t know what to do with us. But there has got to be someone that wants access to a bunch of well off middle aged guys with their eyes on the screen all day long. Hell, we almost write the bourbon ads ourselves.
I value this site. While I was laying in the hospital waiting to find out how bad I was busted up, the third thing I thought of after notifying family then friends, was that it would make a funny ST thread. But don’t give me, “up yours, now pay me.”
For the record, I can say that I am pretty sure Eric is a good guy. Just not fond of this forum.

I’ll echo this sentiment. When I signed up for my first speed dating event. The first thought was that maybe I’ll meet someone cool. And the second was, I bet the LR would get a kick out of this.
Well, that ties into when is it time to leave a country, when is it time for a country to re-evaluate its relationship with other countries.
I agree, the comments from management, seems like they would really like it if the LR just went away. So at what point, do stop supporting folks with that attitude? How many times do they get to turn the screws before you have had enough, the good out ways the bad?
This is harsh Dan. The service being provided has been free for decades. I don’t think it’s dishonorable to continue to use that service for free until the date and time on which Eric institutes a payment for access, which hasn’t happened yet.
call me an old fogey, but i still adhere to the idea of value in exchange for consideration. you’re receiving the value, but refusing to offer consideration. let me put it to you this way. do you at least feel a little shamed if you don’t give a little to wikipedia? if so, then you understand what i’m talking about.
as to eric, look, there are people who just don’t translate well to internet communities. i think it’s safe to say that eric is one of those. add to that this particular place, where every new member gets a shitkicking from somebody. we all more or less get along because we’ve been in the same room for so long, but few of us had an easy time when we first arrived. eric is looking at a value he’s providing - at some charge and no benefit to him - and wondering if there is any gratitude for that and so far i haven’t seen any. accordingly, maybe putting your thinking caps on and suggesting workarounds that are amenable to you might be an option. (as i did yesterday.)
finally, a couple of months ago i asked eric if he just wanted the LR to go away, and if he did but just found it hard to abandon everyone, i would see if i could publish a new home for us all. eric’s response was no, he would rather make it work for everyone. so, for those who think he just wants to shitcan this subforum no, that’s not the case. i think we’re in that phase of seeing what works for everyone and i don’t think there’s been a ton of helpful suggestions by the members here.
I’m busy attempting to fire off content for the front end of the site – but here goes nothing. Keep in mind that this is my opinion on it.
The original thought of potentially putting the Lavender Room into ST+ membership was not an attempt to kill this place. It wasn’t meant as a fuck you. Yes, it’s meant to help make money from the LR. Because, well, it’s otherwise not. But there’s also many of you who are also some of our strongest supporters across the entirety of the site, not just this slice of the forum. We’ve considered moving other sections – I think the Classifieds might be a better place to slide over there, as it sure as heck would probably kill off scammers.
I understand the vibe that some of you may have gotten with regard to the potential to kill off political talk (which I disagree with – all sports are political anyways). And this change. And it all comes off the back of the forum architecture change.
To borrow the old Rumsfeldism – there were far too many unknown unknowns when we moved to Discourse. Namely, how many people were going to be impacted by the username import issue. Given the rough few billion pieces of content we otherwise migrated here, we got through that side about as OK as I think we could have expected. But the username thing, and the length of time it took for everyone to transition over, those were misses. I think we all wish we could have rolled that out better.
Look, if I could sell people bourbon ads for this side of the house, I would. But I can’t. I don’t have time, frankly. I barely have time to type this out at the moment (I’m on deadline and everyone under the sun is interrupting me). Our partnership arm is rightfully focused on how we fulfill our obligations on the endemic side of the business. But the way brands want to work has evolved over time. We’ve taken a lot of pride in not writing advertorial. I’ll review products, and I’ll give a lot of thought to what I think. If it’s a great product, I’ll say so. If it’s a shit product, I’ll say so. But, as you can imagine, partners don’t love the idea of me telling them that their product might miss the mark. But that’s what you all have come to expect we do. When we say that something works, we mean it.
If somebody wants to start selling those ads, I’m all ears.
Slowtwitch has been a personal and professional home for me since 2008. I started lurking here thanks to one of the old ST classics: poop running down legs guy (and the “for $50, I’ll shit my pants for you right now” post in particular). We laughed our asses off at the run store for hours on that one. When I started racing triathlon in 2011, this was where I got info from. Since late 2016 I’ve been kicking around here – first doing some social media work, then writing, then editing, then managing editor, editor in chief, and now partnered with Kevin in this senior editor role. I love this place. It’ll break my heart if I ever wind up leaving. It’s been a lot.
Anyways. Now I gotta go write. This thing has been weighing on me for weeks now and I just need to finish the damned story and get it published.
