I posted this in another thread, but thought I’d repost it here for all to see. It would be cool if we could get a bunch of people hanging out on IRC chatting in real-time. If you have a moment, why don’t you give real-time chat a whirl by simply following the below instructions.
…
Go grab an IRC program and get chatting. Here are instructions of how to join up so we can have a real time slowtwitch chat. You can use any other IRC client you’d like. This one just happens to be 100% free and 100% open source. Simply use: #slowtwitch and irc.freenode.net as your channel/server.
Instructions:
Click here to Download Gaim (Free IRC Client)
::: Direct link to the windows download here :::]
Then, when you install it… simply check: Run Gaim after it’s finished installing.
Go to “Accounts” - Add new account. Under Protocol, select: IRC
For screen name, pick a nickname. (this can be anything you’d like)
For server, it SHOULD default to: irc.freenode.net Leave that alone. Click save.
Now, in the “Accounts” dialog box simply check the “Online” button to get yourself connected.
Next, in your “Buddy List” click chat at the bottom.
In the Channel area, simply put: #slowtwitch (you must include the # “number” or “pound” sign)
Then click on “Join” You should see the area where we can now chat! Just start typing and if someone is there, you can engage in a real live conversation. I hope to see you and other slowtwitch people there.
If someone isn’t there when you join in… wait a bit. In fact, you can just leave your IRC client (Gaim) running full-time in the background and check on it from time to time.
I’ve got to put the girls to bed, I’ll be back in about 20mins or so, so I’ll be AFK (away from the keyboard). I’ve seen 35 people or so look at this thread, so I’m hoping people will at least give it a try.
Michael? George? Tibbs?
Anyhoo…
be back in a bit, and I do hope to see you guys(and gals) there.
In addition to mmakbenton, asd99 and myself. Hopefully we’ll get more people to hop on.
Remember, what you need to do is to start the program, and leave it running in the background if noone is immediatly available. Once you reach a good mass of people, say 40+ (you can have as many people on an IRC channel as you want, some have around 300-600) then you can start to have live conversations just about any time you look.
Saw you and Drinyth chatting. You gotta “lurk” in order to take advantage of IRC. Most real chat clients (Trillian) others, will not only do MSN, AIM, Yahoo, and other IM protocols, but they’ll also do IRC.
IM sux for multiple-group chat because you can’t have a permanent chat room like you can on an IRC server.
Anyhoo… Hope to see some of you other cats there.
