Sleeping with KT Tape on?

Anyone try this? I’m going to tape my IT Band for a half mary tomorrow but could save some time in the AM by taping it the night before. My 2 concerns are (1) if the tape is uncomfortable and doesn’t allow me to sleep the night before and (2) stretching the tape while sleeping thus making the tape less supportive for the actual event.

wore one for my knee and actually wore it for three days. My PT doubled taped it, and the top actually fell off, presumably due to too much friction. The bottom layer stayed on for another three nights.

This your first time using KT tape?

  1. Tape should be alright. Haven’t had any irritation from mine. Just put it on after taking a shower. Usually by the 4th day it gets itchy.

  2. I doubt it would have any effect.

I have slept and took shower with RockTape.

Dave- You should be fine to wear it while sleeping. The only time we’ve ever heard of problems is if the edges of the tape catch on your sheets. A lot of triathletes will spray the skin with hairspray, let it dry, then apply the tape- to give it some extra strength hold. This isn’t a bad idea for the ITBS X app- especially to help the ‘x’ stay in place.

Good luck!

KT Tape support

After having my shoulder taped for swim related problem the PT told me to leave the tape on untill it fell off which was about three days latter and it felt fine.

I often put tape on my Achilles before bed to save time in the morning if I am doing something early. It works fine. I do not find the tape to be uncomfortable at all.

The tape lasts about 5 days. No reason why you can’t do it the night before.

It’s fine. The tape doesn’t provide any support, unlike “athletic tape.” When it is used on a joint that requires support, it works ONLY through a neurosensory fashion. It shouldn’t impair your sleep; if anything, it should help. Or, rather, if your IT band is bothering you, and you are taping it because of that, the tape should help alleviate your bothersome IT band. If it bothers you sleeping, it likely isn’t going to help your IT band either.

FWIW, I have had zero success with KT Tape helping w/ my ITBS. I have tried every method suggested by KT, and also had it done by my PT. Zero effect.

YMMV…I hope it does!

Folks, Greg from Rocktape here. You can hit youtube or our site and find some helpful taping applications for IT band. Keep in mind that often ITBS is a symptom of some other biomechanical dysfunction. Best to see a medical pro for a complete diagnosis. That said, Rocktape might help. We just launched Rocktape H2O which is designed specifically for Tris - even stickier than our original, yet it won’t peel your skin off when removed. ST members get 10% off too. Use code “slowtwitch” at checkout.

Sleep, shower, train, race. I just used it for the first time, applied three days before a 70.3. Mostly stayed on without problem until i pulled it off after the race. I thought it worked great too, the only problem was a series of blisters that had developed under some of it (totally worth the apparent benefit though).

I have used both RockTape and the SpiderTech tape and kept them on for several days, through a few showers. No discomfort caused at all. Remember that there is little to no tension on the tape.

Rappstar, my PT taped my knee for a patellar tracking issue. She said the tape helped activate the part of my quad that wasn’t firing (causing the problem) through neurosensory (like you mentioned) but also that the tape only stretches along it’s length so it did provide some motion control to correct the tracking issue. I played with the tape once it fell off, and it really did only stretch in one direction. Is this the same KT tape you guys are talking about or something else?

The stuff I had would stay on for about 5 days. The PT had some special wipes that would promote adhesion, but as mentioned, the biggest problem for me was corners getting caught on the inside of my pants and getting rolled off. I never had a problem sleeping though. Just round the corners and stick it down well and it shouldn’t come up. If an edge starts to peel, just trim it back.

Yeah, that’s standard (only stretching lengthwise). But, compared with traditional white athletic tape, “some motion control” is pretty minimal. But yes, all kinesiotape will only stretch in one direction. I mean it has SOME stretch in the other direction, but not very much.

Tuff Skin is an adheisve spray made by Cramer that works really well if you are swimming a lot or for the applications that tend not to stick well (like calf or ankle because of the large ROM). Just spray and then apply as normal.
