Does anyone use one? I just bought a light liner, it’s really basically a bed sheet that goes in the sleeping bag. I bought it mostly to keep my sleeping bag clean.
However, the liner’s marketing fools claim that it can increase the temperature rating of your bag by “up to 10 C”. Now, obviously that number is a crock of crap but do the liners make any difference in the real world in terms of temperature?
They do. Air trapped between your body and the liner, and air trapped between the liner and the actual sleeping bag act as additional insulation layers, if the bag liner is reasonably tightly woven.
A ten degree F improvement in sleeping bag performance is not a huge stretch.
I don’t. Too cumbersome. I like lots of options in thermoregulation in the middle of the night, e.g. sticking a leg out of the bag, etc. Having a bag inside a bag makes that harder.
If I’m too cold, I wear long underwear. If you’re still too cold even fully zipped up and wearing long underwear, your bag might be too light.
I have a thick fleece one I really like.
It’s a rectangle - often I will lay it between my bag and pad and the ground insulation makes a huge difference. Or I stuff it in my bag.
If it’s warm I can use it instead of the bag.
So for late season raft trips it’s the bomb- cause we get snow and warmer nights.
Down booties are the other cold weather camping luxury that make all of the difference IMO.
Oh other awesome cold weather camping gear is a down poncho that snaps down the sides- so can be a quilt too.
I have one of the Rumpl ones from before they got rid of the snaps- they may be back now- but my husband got one and was disappointed at no snaps. Wear it around the campfire as a coat then unsnap it and stuff it in your bag as an extra down blanket. This is the piece of gear that made me decide to use my fleece bag liner as ground insulation as I had this extra blanket to tuck in my bag.
The coldest part of sleeping at nights for me was the air that would touch any exposed skin. I found a liner to be much more comfortable draped over my head rather than closing the bag over my head. Thought the difference the liner made in the bag may have been 5-10 degrees, this felt like a 50 degree difference.
Having said that, I may want to invest in another liner as I still do cold weather camping.
