Sleeper favorite band

It’s that band you never think about, but when it comes on, you need more.

Me: talking heads, especially once in a lifetime but most of their songs hit me

Yours?

The hard part is you can’t answer immediately - this is more visceral - it’s the one you forget about - and hopefully this thread is top of mind when it hits

I can answer immediately because I had a very similar thought recently about Spoon. I’ve never listened to them intentionally, but I always enjoy when I hear them.

For me it’s not one band but rather it’s a whole genre of era of music. I go through phases where I’m listening to a whole bunch of one particular type of music like 80s punk rock, or mid 90s grunge, or whatever. Normally I’ll listen to pretty much anything but I’ll also have these phases of a week or so where I’m drawn to one particular type of music for some reason. One band could favor heavily in that, but typically not. Sometimes it’s pretty easy to spot what triggered it. Last week I watched The Killer on Netflix and since then I’ve been playing a lot of Morrissey, The Smiths, and similar music.

So funny that you posted this question today because I am literally experiencing this right now with The Police. I’m very familiar with their catalog, but for some reason they’re never in my regular rotation. If you asked me to list my favorite 20 bands they probably wouldn’t show up. For some reason they just sort of slip through the cracks. But last night “King of Pain” came on the radio on my way home and it just really hit me how good it is. I listened to Ghost in the Machine** from back to front this morning and I’ve got Outlandos d’Amour going now. **

Keane. Also, The Shore. Keane was one of the songs during my workout today which reminded me.

Three Dog Night comes to mind right away
.

Like bm - not a band, a genre - mid to late 80’s not quite metal but heavy on the hair rock - Aldo Nova, Autograph, Honeymoon Suite, Scandal…

The Cars
.

I think people don’t go back to The Police much because they’re kinda tainted by Sting’s solo work - for the same reason people don’t go back to early U2 because Bono is such an ass LOL

Andy Summers is currently doing a tour where he’s mixing Police songs and his solo work in a multimedia presentation accompanying his photography

Stewart Copeland is all over the podcast landscape these days, promoting his Police Deranged orchestral re-working, a much-anticipated re-release of his Klark Kent solo project (something he’d put together between leaving Curved Air and starting The Police) and upcoming The Police Diaries “memoir”

“This book is the truest account of The Police’s beginning and early days, with original diary pages, hand-made poster designs, ragged accounts and scribblings of a 26-year-old Stewart Copeland. Illustrated throughout with classic and previously unseen photos from the ‘starving years’ of the band who became one of the world’s biggest acts.”

As much as I like punk and New Wave, I never liked the POlice much, but I’ve always liked Sting’s solo stuff.

Now I’ll make it up to you by reminding you of this

That’s me exactly. Zenyatta Mendatta was one of my favorite albums in high school, but everything after Synchronicity just bores me.

I’ve gone months if not years sometimes without listening to Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead and Phish. Then I’ll just start listening to them regularly again, and wonder why I stopped for so long. Especially with the internet, you can always find good live stuff from when they were at their best.

Saw the Cars mentioned already- was a huge fan in HS and can’t help but turn them up when I hear them on the radio.

Morphine comes to mind. Been rewatching the Sopranos, and there’s an episode in S1 where Meadow and her friend are watching MTV or something and the video is “Buena”. Good stuff.
