Skinsuit vs Trisuit (Full IM)

Does anyone prefer using a cycling skinsuit on a full and then changing into preferred running clothes in T2?

Obviously requires time in T1 to get into the skinsuit and T2 to get out of it and into run clothes.

Asking because I think I’d prefer to not run in a trisuit, so if I’m gonna take the time to change, I might as well have a better pad for the ride. (even though it requires more time in T1)

Just my 2c. I CAN NOT run well in tri suit. I opt for skin suit and it takes less 30sec to take it off in t2 and maybe anther 30sec to put on my marathon gear. It is extremely satisfying when the weather is hot. BTW I put on my skinsuit under the wetsuit. Roll down zip open.

that seems right to me in terms of just feeling fresh after the ride.

does the pad not become a sponge during the swim?

Not really. Maybe for couple of mins but I never notice.

Would you be allowed to wear a long sleeve suit? That is gonna be faster than short sleeves right? I didn’t see anything that would prohibit long sleeves when giving the ironman rules a quick glance.

I think you are right. People wear sun sleeves so dont think a long sleeve skin suit would be disallowed.

Oddly enough, my cycling skinsuit is short sleeved.

Bringing this topic back up. Is there a significant time savings of a good skinsuit vs a good short sleeved tri suit?

My NoPinz skinsuit and Jakroo skinsuits have both been extremely fast in TTs, I’ve never done a direct comparison over the fabric in a Spaero tri suit but I imagine fabric that’s intended for cycling has got to yield some time savings over 180km. Plus the pad is going to be more comfortable—less “waddles” equal fewer breaks in aero position.

Keeping the skinsuit folded down underneath the wetsuit, so the legs are already pulled up. Wetsuit off, pull up the top half of the suit, put on helmet and out of T1. Might only add 20-30 seconds?

I’m sitting at about 325-330 FTP in TT, looking to hold 250 for a flat course averaging about 40-41k/h.

I haven’t done an IM since 2016 but as long as a changing tent is still there, it might only be 20 seconds to throw on some comfy dry shorts and a singlet. Looking for every advantage to KQ, going for a 9 to 9:15 finish time. I’m kind of on the slower end of M30-34 qualifiers but I think I’m in spitting distance depending who shows up. And maybe one of the guys faster than me cramps.

I would practice pulling up a long sleeve TT suit when you are wet to see how long it takes

If a long run to T1 you may be able to do it on the run

My skin suits are both short sleeve. I’ve never quite been sold on the value of long sleeves—if there’s even a wrinkle on it the value gets reduced

I’ve used a cycling skinsuit under a wetsuit with the sleeves on (just unzipped) and didn’t have any issues with stroke restriction. As for the chamois, yes it’s soaked through, but it doesn’t impact the swim at all, and all that water is quickly squeezed out once you sit on the bike.
