I used to read MMQB regularly until it became obvious a few years back that King was a mouthpiece for Goodell and the league front office, now here’s even more reason not to like him. He posted to Twitter about being stuck in traffic in San Diego with fellow SI writer Jenny Vrentas on the way to Qualcomm Stadium, so to beat the rush drove in a designated bikes only lane to get there, and then bragged about how much fun it was.
For all the stories we see on here about cyclists being hit or having close calls with inattentive drivers or dealing with having things yelled or thrown at them, this pisses me off. He tends to come off as holier than thou and lectures those who disagree with him, but I guess rules don’t apply to him. Jerk.

I assume this is illegal in San Diego. Let’s assume that there were no cyclists in the way that he had to squeeze out of there, as a minimum, if he broke the law, probably not smart to push out the evidence on twitter…can you screen capture the twitter post and post it here as evidence before he realizes he should take it down?
What irks me is that when I was hit by a car years ago, it was by a woman who blew through a light that was turning red and then whipped across traffic making a left turn into a gas station, sending me across her hood. First thing out of her mouth when she got out of her car was “Great, I’m already late for work!” I was lucky where had I been a split second faster (I was already slowing down for the red light), I would have been hit flush by her but instead caught her front fender (my front wheel and fork got crunched) and wasn’t seriously hurt.
It’s bothersome that Kyle Koster calls out cyclists in this article for being sensitive to any encroachment on their space (I do get the sense of sarcasm in his line about journalists being important) but it’s the latest example of people being ignorant or indifferent to the fact that we have to follow the same rules of the road as they do.
How do we get the local law enforcement to act on this in San Diego area? Any locals who can start the process? Slowman, as a cycling friendly premier web portal any chance of writing a front page article and then having it shared via the ST facebook page and tweeted out via ST twitter?

It’s illegal in California, besides being just stupid, dangerous and douchey. He’d risk a life coming up behind a slower moving bike in the bike lane because he had to have another Big Mac and was late to the game.
Vehicle code section 21209:
(a) No person shall drive a motor vehicle in a bicycle lane established on a roadway pursuant to Section 21207 except as follows:
(1) To park where parking is permitted.
(2) To enter or leave the roadway.
(3) To prepare for a turn within a distance of 200 feet from the intersection.
(b) This section does not prohibit the use of a motorized bicycle in a bicycle lane, pursuant to Section 21207.5, at a speed no greater than is reasonable or prudent, having due regard for visibility, traffic conditions, and the condition of the roadway surface of the bicycle lane, and in a manner which does not endanger the safety of bicyclists.

Slowman…help once you have finished your coffee and Olympic marathon excitement!!!
Not only is it illegal (of course it is), if this is where I think it is, two cyclists have been killed on that street in the past couple of years. Central San Diego’s topography mostly consists of canyons/mesas, and there are not a lot of north/south streets that “go through” into the valley areas. So, for instance, getting from downtown San Diego to Mission Valley (where Qualcomm is located) is a shitshow because there are literally 2 northbound streets you can use to get into Mission Valley. There has been a big movement to put in wider bike lanes on these north/south roads to protect cyclists, and lots of motorist complaints about “taking away lanes” (notwithstanding the fact that there are few places where lanes being “taken away”, usually the existing lanes are just made a little more narrow to make the bike lane wider). I think this photo captures the downside of the wider cyclist lane perfectly - now they are wide enough for cars to squeeze into, making the bike lane even more unsafe.
I guess the tl:dr takeaway is this: efforts to make cycling safer just can’t win
Laws, shmaws. It’s critical that we get top-notch coverage of a Cardinals-Chargers preseason game.
My interest in the big three sports has dwindled to almost nothing.
As I age I ask myself why am I watching other people play sports when I could be out doing it myself. Furthermore, 99% of the population play their last football game in high school. Probably the same for baseball too. Hardly lifetime sports.

Agree about football (although I’m a big NFL fan).
Baseball though, lots of people play well into their golden years, albeit in beer league softball form
Apology? Jenny whatsername posted something similar with the same excuses
-we were late and had to get there… yeah? I’m late for work, think I’ll just drive on the sidewalk
-it was only a “few hundred feet” - OK, that makes it all better
-sorry for,… what… “the post.” Not for being an entitled douchebag, breaking the law or risking our lives. But for posting it, because he took a rash of shit for it.
And this apology is buried somewhere in between a description of his last meal (a bacon burger, of course fat piece of shit), and his love for Adele, in the original column piece.
Why is the police department only responding via Twitter. Can they not actually ticket/fine the driver based on this evidence, or is the problem that there is insufficient evidence to prove who the driver is? It seems like there is a lot of evidence about the identity of the driver.

I was curious about what his ‘apology’ actually consisted off. I had to really hunt for it. It was like reading the fine print of a document. Like you said, it was buried in among his random non-football thoughts near the end of his MMQB column (item 10(r), to be precise)

Here’s his ‘apology’: My apologies to those offended (and you should have been) by my tweeting the photo the other night of our car in the bicycle lane for a few hundred feet near Qualcomm Stadium, hustling to get there in time for an interview. Dumb by me for sure, and I’m sorry for the post.
Seems he’s more sorry for posting it than he is for being in the lane…kind of a backhanded apology, at least from my lens. I’m actually glad he tweeted the photo. Now there’s proof. This only helps us (cyclists) build our case against irresponsible motorists. We are offended that you were even in the bike lane to begin with.
Quick update - King did hear from San Diego PD via Twitter (along with a lot of other people) and apologized via his SI column today:
Is the whole country run by Twitter now?
And since he apologized, I guess everything is okay then…
Maybe Twitter has worked with the Police department and the back in data bases that manage your demerit points and VISA’s servers so the moment you post evidence of a traffic violation on Twitter the if-then-else loop gets activated and the demerit points come off the value of the ticket show up on your next VISA bill. It’s probably in the Twitter analytics software now (pink font)
