Have you been short of breath, coughed up pink sputum or been taken to a hospital for treatment of pulmonary edema during or after a swim or dive?
Doctors at Duke University are doing a research study to determine whether this can be prevented using the drug sildenafil. Triathletes, divers and swimmers who have experienced SIPE are needed to participate in this exercise study in water.

Can you harness the side effects of sildenafil to maintain more directional stability in the water so you don’t have to sight as often?

Sildenafil is the generic name for Viagra. It can be used for erectile dysfunction or for pulmonary hypertension. I was making a joke that while swimming, someone would be able to maintain a straight course because of the erectile effects of sildenafi would act as a rudder. Clearly the joke fell flat, but we can all have a chuckle now that it’s been explained. Nothing is more amusing than a well explained joke.
