Does anyone know if there are already options in the market for single chainrings or shimano Di2 new 12 speed system?
I’m getting ultegra Di2 12 speed on the new Cervelo p5 2022 model. The bike build comes by default with 170mm cranks, 52/36 and 11/30, but I’d like to upgrade the 52/36 to a single Chainring (54T or 56T) without the front mech…
Not sure if anyone has already developed single chainrings for R8100 crankset… I know they exist for R8000 cranksets, but I wonder if shimano has changed the teeth of the newer R8100 due to the 12 speed… or Will it be exactly the same?
I believe the inner width of the 12-speed Shimano chain is the same as the 11-speed one, so the teeth of a 11-speed chain ring should still fit (I actually believe inner width has been the same since 9-speed at least). IIRC they have changed the chain ring mounting hole pattern for the 12-speed crank sets, so if you are using one of those you would need something made for it.
Would be good to have someone else confirm, but this is my current knowledge.
People have been using 12-speed chains on 11-speed chainrings for while now, and it seems to work :).
You can probably keep using your current crankset - especially if you’re not shifting the front chainrings.
(I’m not sure how it’d work with narrow-wide rings though…)
Pretty sure a single ring for Shimano 12speed needs to have different profiling for the HG+ chain. That’s why the likes of rotor and garbaruk rolled out specific 1x 12 shimano MTB rings, when they already had 11/12 speed rings that worked with other brand 12spd chains. The road and MTB Shimano 12 speed share the same chain. Sure it would work with an existing 1x ring, but might be downsides of reduced chain retention and more noise maybe?
There are mixed stories of mountain bikers having success with HG+ chains on non HG+ chainrings. Some have changed the missing link to a SRAM or kmc. Running a different brand chain is also an option, but you lose the supposed shifting benefits of HG+.

11 speed chainring works without issue. Been running the 12 speed chain on 11 speed chainrings (1x and 2x Sram and Shimano) without issue over many thousands of miles.
Drag2zero confirmed their single chainring on R8000 crank arm work well with 12-speed chain. They don’t have a R8100 new crankset to do testing specifically on that… I still don’t know whether or not I could buy the d2z or aerocoach single chainring for r8000 and install it on R8100 with 12 speed chain… or if it would cause trouble… neither d2z nor aerocoach have released the new specific version of single chainrings for R8100 but looks like the existing one works well with 12-sp chain so I’d assume it shouldn’t be a problem….
