Anyone know which systems will mount a single bottle in-line with the plane of the frame?
Myself and at least one other person on ST (I got the idea form them) took a Bontrager dual cage mount and used the center set of holes to make it a single bottle cage. The holes I think were for other accessories to carry tubes and such I think. In 5 minutes, you can make it a dual bottle holder by removing the single cage and reinstalling 2 holders.
I wouldn’t use the included bottle holders for a single bottle. They are pretty weak, in part because they are assymetrical. I broke on carrying a 24oz bottle tilted at 45 degrees. In hindsight, it was predictable. I now have it tilted on about 30 degrees from vertical.
I do find it will take a lot of practice to use a rear holder. I may try a sidewinder cage next and see if that is easier.
Check out the Bontrager setup. It comes with 2 cages & can be set up to run 1 or 2 at a time. It tilts tp almost angle you would need.
The Tacx saddle clamp can be set up with either one cage centered or two cages offset. It’s fairly inexpensive and has worked well for me. However, it doesn’t come with cages so you would have to purchase those separately.

Thats what I have on mine. I use it to hold my tool/flat kit:

Not to hijack the OP’s thread, but do you put your flat kit in the bottle back there? if so how well does that work? I’ve been thinking about doing that with mine because there really isn’t another good option, but I was curious about how difficult it is to get the stuff back out due to the narrow section of the bottle.
Get creative and use some zip ties. Works fine for me and I have seen many other people do the same.
for tools, there’s storage containers designed for cages like this one:

It works really well. I have 2 tubes, a multi-tool, co2 head, levers, and the wrench for my seat. I have tubes rolled up and wrapped with a loop or two of electrical tape to keep them compact.
