I wouldn’t. Simon is a grown man with a bit of a big mouth. He can handle this on his own.
Not really surprised, I found the comments around that time pretty astounding. I have no idea what Whitfield’s agenda or goal was saying that, knowing that it was unlikely that Pat out of some semblance of professionality wouldn’t say anything in return. She was dropped by another coach this year (who is by most accounts one of the best in the world) no idea as to what the issue was, but Joel is not blogging about it.
The real issue (or one of the issues) as I understand it was that Paula was low on iron in and around the time, I found it astounding it was not known or no effort was made to test, identify and solve this problem. How much money did the canadian tax payer spend to train this athlete and send them to the games?

man, i feel like triathlon in canada has been a hot mess for ages now. not at the grassroots level - the racing scene there is as good as anywhere. but at the policy/development/etc levels . . . yikes.

Why? It was quite obviously public defamation
I heard plenty of rumours about Paula Findlays “secret training” above and beyond what her coach was giving her back in the day. Apparently she wasn’t exactly going by coaches orders. Regardless, Simon should have kept his mouth shut.

If it is defamation now, why wasn’t it defamation 2 years ago? Why wait until the last possible moment to file? (BC gives two years from the initial publication of the defamation, which was Aug 4, 2012.)

No idea, perhaps Pat was seeking a reasonable solution in which SW would publicly apologise/retract etc, maybe other things have been said in the interm… Not sure.

I know nothing of facts here, but to address the point about the reasons for waiting … there are many, many reasons for waiting to file a lawsuit. The Courts are burdened as it is, but they would grind to a halt if everyone with a cause of action sued the day after it arose. In my experience, waiting is rarely for nefarious reasons. It can be, but, as I said, it’s rare.
It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out.
I have to admit that I perhaps typed in haste. My foggy recollection about the incident however is not that he singled out one person but called out ‘the whole group’ (organization) for mis-managing (or even letting race).

Unfortunately this is where the problems are when some people talk and others don’t. Simon didn’t present a balanced report. Paula was the problem and the root cause of the health issues and injuries. TriCan and the coaches/sport science staff knew about her medical issues. The fact that she was dropped again this year is an indication that maybe she is the challenging one and not the coaches who are making the mistakes. Of course the entire TriCan group has some fault in Paula’s situation and the have now moved the CEO put and brought in a new HP Director and head coach.
Simon burned a lot of bridges with his comments after the Olympics. Unfortunately for the sport in canada, he burned those bridges for all the athletes.
Didn’t he rant here on the forum too? I don’t have twitter and read all about this.
Simon should be sued for wrecking that other dude in the Olympics because he couldn’t figure out how to put his shoes on and ride at the same time.

And then there’s the ridiculous helmet he was wearing…
I was coached by said coach and it was not good.

Triathlon president Alan Trivett is concerned Whitfield¡¦s comments will be a distraction for his teammates, but he agreed mistakes were made by Findlay¡¦s team.

And frankly I don’t’ see Patrick Kelly as that great of a coach. He doesn’t speak up for the good of his athletes. The Triathlon Committee here in Hong Kong recently decreed that our Junior Elite athletes CANNOT pay their own way to ITU races when GB, Australia and other countries allow so. They refused to endorse some of our junior athletes and only reversed course after we complained everywhere - to ITU, facebook etc. And even then they wanted said athletes to sign a letter stating that this situation was caused by them not meeting their athlete obligations without specifying, when they clearly met all training hours etc. Patrick Kelly in private said yes he supports the view that elite athletes can pay their own way to races if the committee doesn’t have the funds to fund athletes but he never voiced this out.
Not saying that this is his doing but team selection rules for races are widely inconsistent - I’m sure the head coach should have a say in decisions but thus far it doesn’t look like he’s done anything.
Jctriguy. You sound like you should have gotten the head coaching job 2 years ago. Then everthing would right in the world.

Welcome to slowtwitch In the future you should reply to the person directly so that people can follow the response.
Some here have some actual knowledge of the full situation, others just have Simon’s comments and personal opinions. Not sure what your comment has to do with anything??
