Simon W. running Canada XC Nationals

So over on letsrun.com someone started a thread wondering how ST’s own Simon Whitfield will do at the Canadian XC National Championships. Any chance he’ll show them that triathletes really can run?? My money is on Mr. Q to do quite respectably.

Define respectable. To me exceptional would be to qualify for the WC. Repectable would be say top 20 - 30. Just curious what you have to do to even get in the race.

I am sure that Simon will represent himself and the sport of triathlon very well! Afterall, he is one of the fastest runners in triathlon.

You basically show up… and you can compete. The rules:

For the 2006 Canadian Cross-Country Championships, Junior & Senior only, the following athletes are eligible to compete: Athlete Citizenship Eligibility Canadian Citizens who are Athletics Canada members;Only Canadian Citizens are eligible to be declared Canadian Champions and receive a medal, award, or financial recognition. All athletes must be a member of Athletics Canada in order to be eligible to compete. Membership must be obtained through one of Athletics Canada’s provincial branches. Non-Canadian Citizens
The following non-Canadian citizens are also eligible to compete:
Note: Non-Canadian citizens are not eligible to be declared Canadian Champions and receive a medal, award, or financial recognition. Canadian Permanent Residents (Landed Immigrants) who are Athletics Canada members and full-time residents of Canada;Athletes who are claiming refugee status, and foreign athletes who are temporary residents of Canada due to business, study or family reasons, providing that they are Athletics Canada members and have been a resident in Canada for at least six months prior to the date of competition.Foreign athletes who are in good standing with their national athletic organization, who have been invited and have had their applications accepted. Acceptance of these entry applications are at the approval discretion of the Director of Endurance Events. Athletes in this category will not be required to obtain Athletics Canada membership.
The Canadian Masters Championships are open to all male and female masters and sub-masters aged 30 years and over on race day. Male and female competitors will run in the same race. Because sub-masters (men and women 30-34) are a CMAA classification, they are eligible to run in the Masters race.

Hello,
Again define “will represent himself and the sport of triathlon very well”. I’m not trying to give anyone a hard time and I consider the top tri runners to be very respectable runners. I just don’t think any 1 sport elite runners have to worry about the tri guys taking their spots for the WC or OG.

i bet he’ll do very well…and if they day is muddy i bet he’ll do even better.

Guys it’s the off season…Simon is still in his break… cross country is meant to be a fun run, not to show anybody anything, just play in the snow for 10km or so.

When is it?

“Again define “will represent himself and the sport of triathlon very well”.”

If you want a number(place) or a time, I am not going to do that. I suspect that he will surprise more than a few and beat many runners, and that’s all they do! More importantly it’s the off-season and this is a great way to get the cob-webs out, while having some fun at the same time.

don’t spoil our fun Joel!! good luck to him anyways!

Tomorrow! or today, depending on your time zone.

Go SW!!!

simon can run, I think he’s gone 28min on the track, which ain’t too shabby for a runner… Mr. Q, kick some ass!

Maybe not guys but on the women’s side: Carol Montgomery qualified Sydney 2000 Triathlon and Athletics 10,000m

.

I thought of her, also, but technically she was a runner who took a triathletes spot, not the reverse.

Ultimately I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened for a male, but it wont be common and it wont happen from a country with a strong distance running group.

Simon will run even faster next year.

"I thought of her, also, but technically she was a runner who took a triathletes spot, not the reverse. "

Carol was certainly more of a triathlete than a runner - her focus was clearly tris throughout her career. She only did a few run events per year, where she competed in the full world cup triathlon circuit for many years.

Joel

Congrats to Simon on a great race!

whoa Herbert, what are you alluding too there… Canadians can only ride Canadian bikes and use Canadian maple syrup, remember that, I’ve heard they die instantly if they use any of that fake syrup stuff, just imagine on a Canadian on a non-canadian bike, scary eh:)

STer “woyts” raced at nationals too, a nice time on what looked like a slow course
