Interesting study published by the University of Lausanne, based on biological parameters monitoring.
Positive tests by WADA are <2%.
Perhaps the title would be more accurate if it indicated 18% of professional endurance athletes competing in a world championship.
“blood samples from 1,222 athletes who took part in endurance events (race walking and track events from 800m”
yeah that 800m is quite the endurance race lol
.
It’s a middle distance event with a considerable aerobic contribution. Good Endurance is a necessity to compete at that distance.

I hate these recap articles that never bother to cite the original research…red flag there.
Here it is: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/736801v1.full
It is a not yet reviewed preprint, so unless you are an expert and can competently offer a critical review…might want to leave this alone for awhile yet.
Some biological parameters fell outside a particular range in 15% of male and 22% of female athletes, in certain sports, at 2 international events in 2011 and 2013.

Oh wow ok

I’m doing a 1600m race next Sunday - I know the burn. I didn’t know it was classified as ‘endurance’ though.
Actually, I will really be feeling the burn. I haven’t been running or sprinting and feel fat. I’m pretty heavy right now at 194-196lbs at 6’0. I did bike 400mi last week, so thats something. I don’t know if it will be enough to get the time I want and it seems like a long hike to go to the race to get a bad time, so I guess I will have to just enjoy it or something. I still might have time for treadmill intervals…yeahhhhhhhh
Just look at the training (miles/wk) that 800/1500M runners do. It’s much more akin to what a 10K runner does than a 200M sprinter.
To the OP,I’m actually surprised that it’s as low as 18%. I’m guessing there is a lot of microdosing and other methods that didn’t register. In world class T&F I’d be shocked if the majority were clean.

oh ok - I see what you mean
Yeah, I also hate when they don’t point the study
Thanks for finding the original paper! Had looked for it but couldn’t find it…

Agreed. Doping has a history of being openly condoned at top level track & field. (If you have doubts, trace where the BALCO guys went after baseball. A couple changed their names but, during the same era as the referenced study, they were “training” Usain Bolt and the Jamaican team.)

And 200 meter runners could be blood doping to assist with the quality of training and recovery. Marion Jones was doing EPO for a reason.

The 18% are just the ones who don’t know how to manipulate the bio passport more effectively so that they weren’t noticed.
There’s is just too much to gain from doping for the professionals not to do it. I know there’s the everyone is doping so I have to dope to be competitive excuse, but for track and endurance athletes in most countries there is either sponsorship at the elite level or if you’re a few seconds slower: obscurity and poverty. So many are beating the tests, how can someone not dope. Saw something recently that 10 out of 11 pros who went under 9.8 for the 100m event tested positive for something (Usain being the only one not popped). I also enjoy professional cycling, but still am skeptical, especially when I see very young riders performing at previously unseen levels.
Yeah, the pressure to perform is immense. For example, (and in no way am I implying that any of these guys or girls are doping) SwimSwam just ran an article on all of the USA swimmers who are likely to miss getting funding because theyre not ranked highly enough.
The basic model is that to get funding from USA swimming you need to be on the national team (top 6 in the USA during the qualifying period,) plus top 16 worldwide during the period. So far so good. But on top of that, only 26 men and 26 women can receive funding, which is by ranking as well, so the cutoff would up being something like 13th worldwide in the men. About 20 athletes met the top 16 but not the top 26, including such notables as Ryan Lochte and Cody Miller.
It’s incredibly hard to get to that level, and just as hard to stay there. So it makes sense that people would be tempted, again, not saying that they are following through on the temptation to dope but they do need to look for an edge where they can.

Of the fastest thirty times in 100m history Usain Bolt is the only name that hasn’t been popped for doping and he holds nine of them, including the three fastest. He’s one hell of a special athlete to have a career like that without once testing positive. The closest I can come to another record that is Lance.

YEP!!! and ppl wonder why we are sceptical.
the female marathon is an interesting one too
