Side-to-side play in my Zipp Super9

Hi guys need your help please,

I’ve been struggling with an enormous amount of play in the rear Super9 disc wheel so I changed all my bearings in the wheel and free hub but the play remains, the new bearings I put in were:

Super9 wheel bearings:
ENDURO 6803 VV - ZERO CERAMIC
ENDURO 6903 VV - ZERO CERAMIC

Freehub bearings:
ENDURO 6803 VV - ZERO CERAMIC x 2

Now before you say it’s just the bearings I’ve put in I was having major side to side movement before which prompted the bearing change.

I have tried tightening the adjuster to take out the play but then the wheel won’t turn very well and is stiff, I’ve tightened as much as I can but it still has huge sided to side movement.

Please help.

If while holding wheel at top and bottom and rocking wheel back and forth produces excessive play, its time for new axle.

Really, that’s exactly how I find the play.

Is the really tiny shim in place behind the freehub? If it’s not there you can get that behaviour.

Yes that’s there.

Just curious, did you ever figure out how to eliminate the side-to-side play issue?

I have the same issue with my Super 9. I’ve threaded the clinch nut down to where it stops and backed it off 1/16 and have the side-to-side play. I’ve even tightened the clinch nut down as much as I can, and still have side-to-side play of about 1mm. Lastly, I have added new bearings and a 2nd .25mm washer based on Zipp’s recommendation.

I thought for sure Zipp had said in the past that this is how the wheels are designed, to have some play in them when not weighted down.
