Sick of Magura brakes on my Cervelo P5, what replacement brakes should I get?

After many failures and sending the stock Magura brakes for replacement on two occasions, I am hoping to avoid further headaches, so I am getting rid of the stock Magura hydraulic rim brakes that came with my Cervelo P5-6.

What brakes do Slowtwitchers recommend using as replacements?
It seems that Tririg Omega X and TRP are favorites.

I am curious to hear about others experiences in changing brake setups on the Cervelo P5.

I have a p5-6 and have had zero issues with my Magura brakes. What type of issues might I be in for? what have you experienced?

More often than not, when I fly with my bike the brakes get air in the hydraulic line and I have to get them bled on arrival. This has happened 7 out of 11 times I have flown with my bike in the last two years.
With significant temperature fluctuations the hydraulic fluid leaks out of the brake levers and I have to bleed them to solve the problem. This happens 2-3 times over the course of a Canadian winter.

I’m just tired of the hassle and never knowing if the brakes are going to work when I fly for training or racing.

That sounds terrible. Thanks for the info.

I have this bike for so long - 6 years - and flown with it so many times and didnt have the issues with the bleeding you are experiencing

nevertheless - my buddy is running p5-3 with omegas and he likes it

I had 4 flights last year with the maguras without problems.
It’s worrying however that the threadowner had these problems. He seemed however not have exchanged his leaking leavers, maybe it was just a problem with his very leavers.

Anyone nows where I can find these for the maguras brake, or I need to by the whole caliper.
I can´t fine any place to buy it online.
Really apreciate any info
Thanks

Sounds like the RT8s are discontinued. I called magura about it a while back

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I got one of the 1st P5-6 that came out. Have flown all over including Europe several times, Hawaii a couple with it, Puerto Rico, and all over the US. Never really any trouble. The front end is a bit trying to take apart, but I always managed, and I’m not much of a mechanic.

Hello Nicotriman and All,

I think Rocky may have a stash of some brake parts.

Personally, I ditched 'em for standard Dura Ace calipers - happy with the decision.

Do you have any pics?

Sorry, I do not! Been a long time.

Edit: Sorry - I read this too fast and now see that this was specific to the P5. I replaced the Maguras on a different bike.

Omega and TRP is you want to keep them fully hidden. The TRP fits under the cover with just a bit of trimming and the magura covers can be glued to the omega cover. Here is mine:

But to he honest, I’d recommend something else if you care more about power/feel than aero. I never realized how weak and flexy those brakes were until I built a road bike with the same wheels, pads, and cable housing, but standard top-spec brakes (FSA K-Force WE). Omega+TRP is sufficient for tri and looks clean, but I’d venture a guess they will be far weaker than your Maguras.

Cool setup. I’m assuming the Profile stem but which basebar? How did you source the Scott Plasma bento? Any options or tilt?

Thanks. Yes the stem is PD. I had the 3T Vola bar with race cups, Tririg extensions and PD race cups. No tilt. I did a google search for the bento and ordered from a random shop that had a listing at the time.

This past winter I made a change to Alpha classic which adds 10mm of pad reach, along with D2Z extensions, and custom cups. Cups look huge in the picture but the curvature is actually between that of the PD race and ergo cups. Pads are made of CeeGee’s new thinner material.

Which dura ace did you use? Please provide link. Pics?
Thank you.

Looks like he’s running SRAM breaks. I asked in his comments about how the fairing but didn’t get a response. I’m not sure where he got it from but I’d make the jump to cabled breaks if I could figure out the fairing situation.

I communicated with him. Tririg brakes, SRAM levers…brakes come with a magnetic front plate that he modified and epoxied to inside of front fairing so that it just clips in via magnets. Its super clean. Oh and I think he glued the front fairings into one piece.

Thats exatly what I did some years ago. Works great
