Shrinking shoes

I did a mud run the other weekend. Had fun, got dirty (although they cheated and used clay for the “mud” pits). I used a recently retired pair of shoes (Asics gel evolution) to run in, and they naturally ended up pretty filthy. When I got home, I took out the insoles and gave the shoes and soles a good rinse in cool water, then let air dry for a few days. I slipped the insoles back in easily enough, but the shoes now seem about 2 sizes too small width-wise. I had to completely undo the laces to get my feet in, and it looks like I’m trying to stuff giant hobbit feet into them.
Did I really shrink my shoes that badly just by rinsing them? Should I not have taken out the insoles and let them dry? Is there no saving them at this point?

Wet them again. Put 'em on wet and go for a run until they dry. Adjust laces as needed during the run. You’ll end up with a custom fit.
