An experienced rider told me I need to pop my saddle sore and cover it with witch hazel and a band aid. That sounds terrible and I feel like it could go very wrong. Should I do it? If so, is there a special technique haha?
Sterilized needle and neosporin are what I use. In my experience, saddle sores just don’t go away in the midst of training without draining them. I’ve tried leaving them on their own and taking matters into my own hands and draining it has always been way better and much faster healing. I took great pains to insure it never got infected, though.
Oh boy can’t wait haha. Anything special to avoid infection other than regular washing and neosporin?

Don’t squeeze it, use a steril needle. Squeezing it can force the pus into your body making the situation worse.
Kept mine covered in Maximum Strength Desitin (purple tube). And within 2 days it was flush with my skin and a very small lump. I still rode and kept it dry after it shrink with nothing on it. A week and it was completely gone. It was bad too, looked like a third nut but purple. Probably didn’t help I did Augusta 70.3 with it. Clean the area well after you bike or run (bacteria) and wash bike shorts really good.
Had them years ago. The night before IM Canada, I had to do something, so I popped it with a needle and squeezing. Rode 112 in the race the next morning without issue. I simply washed it well with soap and water in the shower right after popping it. No problems.
is it a saddle sore that would make it to Tosh.O?
Depends, if it can be popped yes but it might not be a pus filled sore. For the later kind, in my experience, lancing or squeezing will only cause them to be more painful and delay healing. In my experience you need to rest and cortisone cream this kind. Look for hemorrhoid cream with cortisone and a topical pain relief.
No.
Put tea tree oil on it to help keep it from getting infected and to help with the healing

Any history of MRSA? If so then hell no, do not pop. If not, then I’d suggest a sterilized needle and neosporin ointment. Saddle sores suck. Let it heal, then find a saddle that works for you and change out of your tri kit/bib shorts as soon as you can following a ride.
Dude, you know the rule. Pic or…well, never mind!
Oxy pads (the face cleaner) work really well at cleaning the area up. But don’t pop it if you can avoid doing so.

I’ve had best results with the Oxy pads.
I use them after every ride now too, just for preventative maintenance.
I use just plain oxy10 cream.

Staphylococcus aureus is nasty regardless of whether it’s methycillin resistant, and you don’t need a history of it to be killed by it… happened to an (ex) acquaintance.
Having said that - if you’re going to pop it, use a sterilized needle (rubbing alcohol at minimum) and clean the area around the location you’re going to poke thoroughly with rubbing alcohol before you do anything. After doing whatever mining you feel is necessary, get more rubbing alcohol on (in) there and then an antibiotic ointment. Clean the area and reapply the antibiotic a couple of times a day until it heals. And if you get swelling, red streaks on the skin, and/or if you feel crappy all over - go to the ER right away.
MRSA are the norm right now. don’t pop it unless it is about to go by itself.
You don’t want MRSA bacs, seriously.
Take note of the advice offered to get it resolved without “surgery”. Otherwise, please see one of the few knowledgeable MDs.
Pain in the ass to find one…
And wash your cycling shorts ASAP after every ride!!

I had this happen to me although I survived. Had grape sized lump that kept getting bigger and was hard as a rock. Stopped at urgent care on way home from work hoping they could lance it. They sent me directly to ER where team was waiting for me and they hooked me up to every IV antibiotic under the sun. I had to have emergency surgery and spent four days in intensive care. Shit got real when they brought a priest in before my surgery. That said, I still pop them. They only get worse if you do not.
I don’t want to comment on whether you or anyone else should popping it or not, but I would consider that not all lumps are the same. I wrote the following blog post a few years ago after an experience and I’ve had variety of types of sores from infected hair, abrasion type and pressure sores. I’ve had pressure sores as large as a peanut. These can occur from pinching the skin, pressure from sitting too long in a bad position or hitting the crotch to hard going from a standing position to seated. If it is a non-infected pressure sore and is simply inflamed tissue from impact pinching it is just going to make it worse since pinching, pressure or impact caused it in the first place. You can lance these type and they may bleed but there may not be anything there to drain. By opening up the skin just invites infection.
This is just an opinion based on not all lumps are the same and not all are infections.
By the way I’ve had some success sitting on a thin ice pack for pressure sore to reduce the inflammation.
