When I run marathons, I eat a lot of gel. I like to use the individual packets, instead of a flask, so I can dose myself every 40 minutes or so, and enjoy the many delicious flavors on offer.
Last race I carried my amphipod belt, but it’s more than I really want to carry. Before that, I used to use electrical tape to hang the pouches inside the waistband of my shorts. Unfortunately, 5 gel packs in there looks a bit odd, not to mention the weird looks I get when I go to fish one out.
So, I recently saw some guy running in some shorts with a row of mesh pockets across the back, and a gel packet in each pocket. Does anyone know where I can get a pair of these? Also, I like short, loose shorts with notched sides, so does anyone make them in that style?
2nd the Desoto. “Tuesday” run short is nice. Also, they have some longer models that you can actually run in and just bum around in (you can actually wear these in public without embarassing the wife and kids).
You can get split shorts, longer shorts and bike-type shorts.
On the LD (long distance) shorts, there are dividers across the butt to hold like 4 individual gels and center pocket will hold 2 more.
I have about 5 pr. of the LD, and they are GREAT. I usually change into them for the marathon part of IM, as there are also 2 side pockets where you can have salt tabs, NSAID’s, whatever’s, stashed.
Very comfortable, very durable.
I also have DeSoto shorts, but when I want to run with a bunch of gel, it’s the Race Ready shorts that I will use.
I like the Sugoi tri shorts with the mesh pockets (for chicks: http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=17610). I have a couple of pairs of loose running shorts I purchased at REI that have mesh pockets, but when I put gels in the pockets, they flop around way too much for my taste. Here is something similar to what I have: http://www.rei.com/...HP_MENS_CLOTHING_TOC
I have a pair of those Sugoi shorts in black and, except for the bright orange volleyball short-shorts my mum made me wear in the 80s, they are the most uncomfortable shorts I’ve ever owned. It’s like they forgot to add any spandex and made them 100% out of nylon or something.
I use some New Balance shorts that I like a lot. They are black, baggy, but not too baggy, and have one, zippered, mesh pocket in the back and two smaller ones without closures on either side. In the mesh one, I’ve had a couple of credit cards, a bag of Cliff Bloks, and a cell phone. Tight, but they fit.
The other good thing about them is that they come with a detachable set of built in wicking underpants. I’ve done half marathons in them without Body Glide and had ZERO chafing - nice!
I got three pairs at Jack Rabbit Sports on 14th Street in Manhattan.
The numbers off of the inside of the waistband are: RN#96937 and CA#06054. No name there, other than New Balance.
Thanks for the pointer. I’m off to the Runner’s High to get me a pair. Then I’m going to cram them full of Gu and head for Black Mountain. It’s gonna be awesome!
Another vote for DeSoto ( and no, I don’t have a bunch in stock to sell either).
DeSoto has used a powermesh stretch mesh fabric sewn onto strategic areas of their ultra-distance tri short and their 400 mile bike short that work quite nicely.
For a run specific piece the tri short is very nice.
The Sugoi shorts are compression (or something like that) so they definitely feel different than regular shorts. You never want to buy shorts like that in a size too small:)
( and no, I don’t have a bunch in stock to sell either).
Tom,
I’m surprised! The Desoto website lists you as one of only two dealers in Michingan. I was going to stop by to check out the Tuesday and Long Short models of their training shorts. Sorry, but your “confession” means I would be wasting my time if only looking for those models of shorts.
The positive, there are plenty of other reasons to stop by Bikesport.
