Shopping in Singapore

Looks like I will be spending a few days working in Singapore in late September…

What can yout ell me about shopping - both triathlon and non triatlon related - in Singapore? Once upon a time (20 years ago) it was a shopping mecca, but that reputation does not seem to be there anymore.

What’s the best bike shop?

Will I be able to pick up a bargain?

Hi Geoff,

Some road/tri bikeshops you might want to consider:

Treknology (they have 3 branches) - Trek, Litespeed, Conalgo

Bikehaus - Cervelo

Cycleworx - Pinarello, Fondriest

Soon Watt - Principia, Orbea, plus components from Easton

There are a few others stocking Look, Specialized, etc…

I would say prices are comparable to those you might find stateside. Might be some bargains for previous years’ models.

Non-bike shopping is still pretty good if you know what you are looking for…electronics/computers (at Sim Lim Square), pottery (Pottery Jungle), running shoes (generally cheaper at retail, and esp so in Queensway Shopping…crowded with students), food is good, cheap and limitless in its variety (except alcohol which is heavily taxed.)

Oh…by the way…some major tri-events happening in Sep. There is the OSIM International Triathlon, which is an Oly Distance on 29 Aug and the Desaru Triathlon on 18 Sep which is 1/2 IM distance (this in in Desaru, Malaysia, which is 1 hr by road or 30 minutes by ferry). Mind the heat and humidity though…

Hope this helps!

First off, best shop is Cycleworx. I won’t badmouth the other shops around but you’ll find straight answers and all the good toys there. Check it out at www.cycleworx.com. If you’re planning on going by there, private message me and I’ll hook you up with the owners…

One thing you need to remember about shopping in Singapore, or most of asia for that matter, is that the price is always negotiable. Things may have price tags on them but as long as you’re not in a big name shopping center with mainstream shops, you can and should always haggle over the price. This is especially true at all of the bike shops in Singapore as I have never once paid the list price but if you don’t know better you could end up paying way too much at some of the shops.

Like the other guy said, Sim Lim for electronics, or for something a little less seedy go to Funan. Running shoes galore at Queensway Shopping center but don’t think about going there if you have clausterphobic fears as that place can be a bit nuts at times…

For anything else, or if you just don’t know what you’re looking for, Orchard Rd. Anything and everything there…

I’m over in Brunei, and was wondering if Singapore had a decent cycle shop. There isn’t one that I can find in Brunei.

Now if only they stocked Gu Chocolate Outrage, which I’m having to order from the US.

Cheers,

Justin.
