Shop-owner's dream - or maybe nightmare

From today’s NY Times:

“IN April, two months before turning 39, Stacy Jargowsky decided to learn to ride a bicycle. So she spent $9,000 for a brushed-silver custom-made bike called a Guru. “If I can only have one, I feel like it should be the best,” she said.”

From an article titled “You paid how much for that bike?” in today’s Style section.

And I think twice about buying new tires.

What the hell bike did she get?!?!?! My Crono wasn’t anywhere near $9k.

maybe the Veloi’Ti with Record components?

$8,895. You could be right.

“Brushed aluminum”? Must mean Ti. If you spend $9k on a bike, you should get it right…

"IN April, two months before turning 39, Stacy Jargowsky decided to learn to ride a bicycle. So she spent $9,000 for a brushed-silver custom-made bike called a Guru. “If I can only have one, I feel like it should be the best,” she said. It was made of titanium, which — gearhead chatter about high performance, ultralight strength and lifetime durability notwithstanding — is as incredibly cool as it sounds. (Try saying “I’m taking my titanium Guru out for a spin today.” Don’t you feel better?)

A few months later, Ms. Jargowsky, who works for Flybar, a pogo-stick manufacturer, spent $10,000 for another custom-made cycle. “They kind of become like pets,” she said. “Once you have one, you want to get another.” This time she bought a Cervelo, made of carbon fiber. It’s black. Carbon, according to many in the gearhead community, is even cooler than titanium."

I just threw up a little bit in my mouth …

Man…pogo sticks must be a much more lucrative business than I thought.

LOL… so I wonder how she spent $10,000 on a P3C, considering they’re around $3k for the frame only, and typically sell for under $5K fully pimped but without race wheels. I think you could be full race pimp for under $7K, but I guess some Lightweight wheels and a Concorde aero bar and you’re at $10k. Wow, and she just learned how to ride

Seriously. We should all be in pogo sticks. I checked the site and it’s not like she even owns the biz.

Maybe those people should do something about the HORRIBLE conditions for cyclists in this state instead of “wasting” the money on bikes they can’t ride anywhere…

And I can’t believe that the doctor guy brags about 22.5 mph going around central park. Totally obnoxious and oblivious to the problems at hand, me thinks.

But the above is only written because I don’t see the rationale for a bike this expensive (that I ride the hell out of and replace every 2-3 years)

Bikes are consumables for me, not accessories.

I have to admit, the same thought crossed my mind for a moment. I’ve held off on getting a bike so far, both for financial reasons and because I haven’t quite figured out how I want to deal with the riding “situation” here in the city. The article didn’t even bother to mention it.

I’ve got no problem with people buying expensive bikes. In my book it’s just as good as spending it on home theaters, cars, vacations, whatever.

I just wonder how that sale happened: Woman walks into bike shop, “I’d like to learn to ride a bike.” Shopowner, “Sure, let me show you a custom Guru Ti. It’s $9k.” Woman: “I’ll take it!”

Weird.

Black carbon Cervelo? Road bike? Perhaps the SLC-SL? Easily a $10K bike.

I didn’t think there was such a thing as a custom Cervelo? And by the way a chinese cf bike is not “cooler” than a made in US of A ti bike

LOL! A buddy of mine worked at a local tri store and told me that someone walked in and said that he wanted a bike to do a local charity ride. The guy left out with a Plasma!

Moral of the story: Do your researche before buying anything over $50!

Guru is based in Canada

I may be an ignoramus in flyover country, but don’t a lot of New Yorkers (in the city) not have cars?

If they don’t have a $300 to $700 a month payment (along with insurance, repairs, gas tires and etc.), then a getting their cool mechanical toy fix with a high end bicycle is quite reasonable.

Tri and Road biking is an expensive hobby, but it is nothing compared to those who are into their cars. Go on a car enthusiast forum and see what people spend on cars, wheels, performance mods, suspension mods, paint jobs, interior bits, in car electronics and etc. If they race those cars, it even goes higher! Compared to them , we are relative cheap skates.

Yea you are right and they actually make them there as well. I was thinking more of the Cervelo but seriously they are both awesome brands.

BTW, your buddies up here tell me your shop is pretty nice. Wish we had something like that up here. Maybe someday a Front of the Pack North?

Yeah Mike, it’s called my garage. where do you think I ordered all those parts for your bike from? Next time you’re in Palo Alto stop by Darell’s shop - it’s pretty sweet.

You’re right, but they have something else that’s astronomically high: cost of living
