Shoes for the ER

So I just got a 2nd job aside from the fire dept. working in an ER. After my first day I learned very quickly I’m going to need some comfy shoes. Being on my feet for 12 hours wasn’t a pleasant experience in my old Adrenalines. I was thinking maybe a new pair of Adrenalines. I get a pretty good discount on Brooks and New Balances. Any suggestions?

I have seen quite a few nurses and Drs in Crocs. Sure they are ugly but they ARE comfy.

My sister who is a doctor swore by Dansko clogs. They make both mens and womens. These are pretty much THE shoe of choice in the ER. http://www.dansko.com/Womens/Footwear/Collections/Stapled%20Clog/Professional/Black%20Box/

Sneakers are too soft.

I was going to say Crocs too. No clue why I would say that though. When I think of crocs I think of young kids and doctors.

Dansko shoes or recently good luck with Nike Free 3.0
.

My hip surgeon wore white wellies. I liked his style.

Mephisto’s. A bit pricey(and not stylish) for work shoes, but fantastic for your feet.

I have no advice for comfy shoes because they don’t exist with my Barney Rubble feet.

What about compression socks while at work?

Nike Frees
The only thing I wear while working in the ED.

I jsut got the Hoka Stinson for running and they are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever put on my feet.
.

Clarks or Doc Martins. Should be slip on with no laces. I spent alot of years working in ERs…CROCs, IMHO, are not good for your feet, DANSKOs are nice, but heavy and clunky. Sneakers leave to much room for blood and body fluids to get through to your socks and ANYTHING with laces makes it difficult to get those body fluids out.

Clarks or Doc Martins are the way to go.

Second the danskos. I am a chemistry teacher and on my feet all day. They are comfy and protect my feet from student mishaps in the lab.

  • 1, from my fiance who is an ER nurse

Depends. Crocs if your feet don’t need a lot of support. Get the bistro model b.c. They don’t slide when the bottom starts to wear when you get them wet with fluid. Crocs are easy to care for and easy to wash when you get blood, puss, amniotic fluid, etc on them. Danskos are great if your feet need support. The problem with the danskos are they are really high I.e. you are prone to twisting an ankle if you don’t have strong ankles since they are such a high clog. Since the danskos are leather or most models are it is harder to clean.

While an avid DM wearer for years (decades, even), they are extremely heavy & clunky. That said, they are the most consistently comfortable brand of shoes out there.

Try the DM Zack. I think you would find I it is not too bad. I agree, a lot of their shoes are heavy, but the slip ons don’t seem to be too bad

Sister & bf, both surgeons, wear danskos. They swear by compression stockings for longer surgeries, so that might be something to look into.

CLOGS! They might take some time to mold to your feet but you won’t be disappointed. The leading clog company dansko actually hand makes the clogs so you may have to try on several pair, they will stretch and then can be more of a hazard.

I feel your pain! Similar situation here as I was a rep in surgery for 14 years, specifically the EP lab where procedures can go on the order of 4+ hours. I started wearing this shoe in the late 90’s and just checked the site and it’s STILL being made. Best thing ever for my feet and back…and they last forever as I still have a pair ready to rock at a moments notice:
