Shoe/leg question

I have the misfortune of very high arches and supinating when I walk but somehow manage to way over-pronate when I run. My normal trend with shoes is to run in a pair of shoes until 300 miles is up then retire them into my everyday walking shoes and pick up a new pair of running shoes. I usually run in the Hurricanes but briefly tried a pair of Evolutions and hated them and went back to a new pair of Hurricanes. I was stuck with the Evolutions and made them into my walking shoes and it seems that since around then I have had constant knee and lower leg pain. Any chance the Evolutions could be causing either of these issues?

Specifically where does your knee(s) hurt? And the lower leg?

Does the pain present in the morning and increase/decrease through the day? how about when walking (increase/decrease as you go)? How about when running?

Can you describe the pain? Sharp/dull, pin-point or diffuse? Can you discern whether it’s tendon/cartilage/ligament/muscle?

With the knee it is behind the knee somewhat deep I would describe it as dull and it only gets worse when cycling although I can feel it sitting down/walking/running, when I run it doesn’t hurt anymore than usual but I can feel it popping pretty frequently.

With the lower leg it is inside of both of my legs a bit below the halfway point of my lower leg, it hurts to the touch and running intensifies this.

How did you come to this “way overpronate when I run” conclusion? You say you have “very” high arches, now posterior keep knee pain at all times (dull, achy) and a more pronounced medial lower leg pain with running.

Is that right? Sounds like a lot going on. How long have been running? Also, how old are you and how much do you weigh?

I once worked at a specialty running store, I have analyzed race videos/photographs of myself and have had coworkers run behind me at times to check out my footfall.

The lower leg pain has existed for a year or so, but it had previously been manageable, but for the last 8 weeks I have barely run and the pain just keeps getting worse.

I have been running for ten years or so I am 22 and 175 lbs.

The knee pain and the lower leg pain are not likely related.

The knee pain…is that in the back of the leg, or are you trying to say it’s simply behind the knee cap?

Pain behind the knee when cycling is oftentimes the result of your seat being too high and straightening your knee all the way out during pedaling.
Have you been cycling long? If so, have you recently changed your bike fit?
It could also be a one-time strain that’s having a hard time healing due to your cycling activity.

I don’t think supination or walking in poor fitting shoes are likely to cause the lower leg pain you describe.

the wrong shoes can and do mess with people from time to time but in your case I’m thinking it’s not likely.

BTW, I’m not sure how you can be both a supinator and pronator. You might simply be describing the tendency of ALL of us to land on the outside of the foot/heel then roll to the inside as we apply weight and toe off…that describes pronation. Bad pronation can lead to inner/lower leg pain, and can be contributed to by shoes that have been collapsed to the inside due to wear.

If you are actually a pronator then some of my previous comments are void.

Just because your ankle is rolled inward when observed from the rear does not mean you “way overpronate”. That is a VERY simplified view of what is going on with that triplane motion. Your pathology is likely completely in the frontal plane (with little sagittal and transverse plane issues). It does sound like you are dealing with some posterior tibial tendon/muscle issues though. Do you happen to be somewhat knock kneed (opposite of bow legged)?
