I’m looking for some help in figuring out if there is some way to bring the stock Shiv TT module aerobars closer together without replacing the whole base and aerobar setup. While the hight adjustability is great, the aerobats are about 4" apart and lack any adjustability to get them closer. I’d ideally like to get them about 2" apart - measuring edge-to-edge - the same spread I have on my P3C. If it in fact requires a new base bar setup, what would you recommend? Thanks for any help.
you want to move the armrest closer together? or the extensions? the extension can be tilted in quite a bit. I have mine set up so that the shifters are almost touching and i can have both my hands wrapped around both shifters at once. There are also aftermarket extensions that are bend inward to bring the hands closer together.
if you just need the armrests closer together, then you can simply drill new holes (I’ve done this as well).
hope that is helpful.
What risers are you using for the Shiv TT? If you are using the extensions that require the crosspiece, then the aerobars aren’t super-narrow (but I wouldn’t exactly call them “wide”, either). If you use the lower stack risers that don’t require the crosspiece, the extensions are pretty damn narrow, IMO…i can barely get an X-Lab torpedo mount between the two. In fact, the mount actually has to go slightly under the extensions because it is so narrow.
ETA - there are 3 width settings for the pads in case you didn’t know. Not certain that anyone would want anything narrower than the most narrow option already provided.
Thanks for your responses.
I’m using the risers that came in the kit included with the module (in other words, factory). There is no “cross piece”. I don’t know if it makes a difference, but this frame is a few years old - can’t remember exactly what year but probably 3-5 years - is it possible they changed the bars since then?
The aero extensions are attached with two screws in a fixed position on top of the riser stack and there is no adjustability - the base bars cannot even be rotated to bring the “s-bend” bars closer together at the shifters. The arm rests are set at their narrowest position and are positioned consistently with the aero extensions being 4" apart.
Bike is at the shop now or I’d (try to figure out how to) post a pic.
Could you guys possibly post pics of your set-ups?
just sent you a PM
.
OK, a couple of things…
Take a look at the Specialized Shiv TT pdf below. Specifically, look at pages 3 (shows the different types of risers) and pages 15-16, which shows their configuration. That said, if you do not have the cross piece, it sounds like you already have the extensions at their most narrow position. You wouldn’t go to using the crosspiece set-up unless you need to raise the bars at this point.

It sounds like you are still using the stock s-bend extensions. If so, you should look into getting the adpaters below, which will allow you to run any 22.2mm extensions you want. This will also let you roll the extensions inward if you desire, which will help effectively narrow the gap between extensions. If nothing else, the adapters get you out of using the stock s-bend extensions, which IMHO, suck monkey balls (and I normally like s-bend bars).

the part number for the adaptors is S130800002
and are described as

Power13 - thanks for your thoughts. Those adapters may work as a last ditch solution, but I’d like to find some way to move both the armpads and the bars inboard. Twisting the s-bends in just takes a bad s-bend design and makes it worse (to hold onto). Up here in Maine we don’t seem to have the specialty dealers that would be able to help me with this issue.
The arm width is fixed in the Shiv TT. You cannot adjust them unless you go from the wider position (with crosspiece) to the position you are currently in.
But I think you misunderstood what I was saying about the adapters…you arenn’t locked into using s-bands when you use the adapters. You can use ski-bends, j-bends or the Zipp Alumina Evo extensions, etc. many of those options have bends that narrow towards the tos. Add in a bit of rotation and I can’t imagine needing anything narrower. I use the Tririg Gamma extensions and my tips are almost touching.

With my 3T Ventus on the P3C, my thumbs are touching without any rotation of the extensions - that’s the position I’m looking to duplicate. I’ll take a look at the Gamma’s and see if they’ll work. Funny, the SHIV has been sitting in my garage staring at me for 3 years because that P3 fits like a glove - time to move on with your help!
My arm pads are off a set of Zipp bars. They are nicely slotted and the pads touch at their narrowest setting.
I always hated the stock bars, so I bend up my own. Hardware store aluminum tubing and a vice get the basic stuff done just fine.
I agree. I do use the crossbar but with the Zipp armrests at the narrowest position, my forearms are almost touching. I use the Specialized extension adapter with 3T ski bends (have the Zipp eve 110’s on order) titled in so my hands touch. Not sure how you could get any narrower.
Thanks everyone for helping me out with this. Your suggestions helped us figure this out. I was wrong about the crossbar - it was in there and I didn’t realize it could be removed. Removing it and slightly rotating the stock extensions looks like it will get me where I need to be. I’m looking forward to racing my new machine - Cheers!
