I’m guessing most of you put it in a jersey pocket or with a bottle cage behind your saddle, but I’m hoping a few of you have other solutions.
I don’t have a bottle cage and toolkit behind my saddle, because my ISM has a hook that I really like in transition.
On training rides and longer (for me, slower) races I’ve had it in my jersey pocket. But I’ve also dumped my pockets into the sand or mud a few times being clumsy in transition. It’s just a matter of time before I actually lose tools if I keep doing that.
Right now I’ve got my Lezyne Pressure Drive stuffed into the soft pocket of the fuel cell with my tire lever. That works ok, but is less than ideal because it means there’s no room for nutrition in there.
I’m thinking about making some little cradles to strap it under and along one of my aerobar extensions.
Haven’t had many flats since I switched to 28c tires, but I’m not willing to ride without a pump or rely solely on CO2 cartridges. It doesn’t need to be quickly accessible, but I’ve got to have it with me.
Jersey pocket. Sure I could use the fuelcell or behind the seat rig. But minipump fits so well in a jersey pocket. I train in a cycling outfit rather than a tri outfit and got bigger pockets. YMMV if you train in a tri kit.
Guess I should have been clearer regarding the brackets that fit alongside most water bottle mounts. That’s what i use on my around-town bike, but the Shiv doesn’t have bottle mounts on the downtube, and the bosses on the seattube are for the fuel cell/toolbox. I tried installing the pump holder between the frame and the fuel cell mount, but it prevents the fuel cell from sliding on.
Can you fit your pump into the hard plastic case part of the fuel cell? I usually have trouble even fitting the tube in there.
I have the really small backburn pump (fits in a water bottle) and it won’t fit along with a tube. That’s why I put it in the top rubber part (still enough room for gels or blocks).
Do most of you carry pumps during races? I carry one on training rides in addition to CO2, but not in a race. I’ve never once had to use on a training ride. Never had an issue with CO2. Ive flatted twice with only two cartridges before and everything went smooth enough that it didnt scare me into wanting other options in a race. Two cartridges on race day, maybe more in special needs with another tube.

For shorter races, I just carry a mini pump as part of my flat kit. If I flat it doesn’t matter if it takes me 3min. longer to fill my tires, since the race just became a training day. It also means that I am sure to make it back to T2. For longer races I have 1 Co2 for fast changes and the mini pump for insurance.
There are lots of cases (ex. loose valve extender) where you can “waste” a CO2…but this never happens to experienced triathletes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtslGL9Qat8&t=101
I definitely always carry multiple canisters. And my chuck only works when depressed on the stem just for the reason in that video. Stayed away from the kind that go off as soon as you screw in the cartridge. But I understand where you are coming from, mistakes can happen. I guess I just rely on good Samaritans or race support at that point, haha. On my road bike, my mini pump wedges up under the saddle quite discretely. Not much place for it on the tri bike (no room under saddle at all).
Never had issues and always practice changing tubes a few times each season (to try to keep it under 5 minutes and just be sure I’m still competent). But again, I realize things happen at the worst times.
